Pass on a 28 inch 4point's and go ahead and put the hammer down on a 30inch 3point?..  if his goal was a 30iincher he has got a good mental tape measure... I was going for 30 last year and ended up with 24, my mental tape measure is junk... dandy 3.. good job
Their going down!!!

I am guessing that most guys couldn't tell the difference between 28" and 30" on the hoof.  I know that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference without watching a deer for a long time.  Either way, it would be really hard to not drop the hammer on a 28" deer or several in this case, so the story seems a little fishy. I'm not saying the guy is lying, but maybe there is a little bit of exaggeration going on. Unless you were deadset on a specific deer, then passing up multiple 28" bucks would be a very tall order for any hunter.

Did you end up helping anyone out this year that pulled a Desert tag?  I know who I am going to call for some advice when I finally pull a Desert tag with 30 points in another 14 years.  :chuckle:
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.

First off had a great time and had a lot of help from a lot of people so thanks for that. We did see the over 30 buck but he got into the fog on us and we did see several 5 points and we did pass on a thin horned 28 inch buck all because we had seen a 6x6 over 30 buck we were after we spotted it bedded in an alphalpa field at 3 in the afternoon the day before season. We tried for him each morning but he was an afternoon buck we hunted with Dick Hemore from Mar Don and we went through so many No Tresspassing and keep out and leased land signs it made you dizzy but he knows everyone and has a track record for seeing the big one. It was just my Grandson Kyle and Dick and I he saw several bucks he said were shooters that we passed on because we just wanted that one buck the deer we saw that was so big my grandson said thers a guy with a white coat on and it was early morning then Dick said a white coat hold it hey thats a buck. And it was a really big buck one of the biggest I have ever seen but by the time we got ready he walked into the fog we came back when it lifted and pushed the hill and saw about 35 deer with several nice bucks. Dick said we should try for the big one by the field so we put Kyle on the fence line at 3;30 and we went to glass some other area the fence line bordered a game refuge with alphalpa on one side refuge on the other. While doing that my wife called and my chocalate lab captain who was 14 passed away in the yard and nobody was around to help so I called and told Kyle we had to leave tonight. Anyway just before dark 3 does and a small buck came into the field down from wher Dick positioned him and instead of staying he started sneeking toward them when he turned around he saw a buck in the field behind him and thought it was the big buck it ran toward the fence and he shot knocking it down but you guessed it right into the reserve. We marked the spot and had to wait for morning. I called John and said I think we got the buck. Next morning when the fog raised we found track where it went in and saw it about 20 feet inside of the reserve. We talked to a warden and he said we could retrive it with no guns and we did. It was;nt the big one he just saw horns and thought it was him but it was a real nice 3 point 25 wide and a nice buck. Dick Hemore was a nice of guy you could ever hunt with he is 73 but just walked the legs off of Kyle and was as knowledgeable hunter as I have ever been with we enjoyed every minute of it. Again thanks to all that provided us with information and advise I thank you and to those who think I can;t judge a 30 inch buck I hope you draw the tag.

All the more reason to wait and post your success yourself, instead of false heresay posted by others apparently in the know.  Glad your grandson was able to have an enjoyable hunt, and ended up with a damn fine buck.

Run, I'm not putting down this buck. It's a great buck as stated above. Huntbear, I'm pretty sure I have his 2011 sheds, I'll try to post tonight.

Original poster put 30". It clearly isn't.
