I also make sure it's sighted in every year. It's been (Remington  700 SPS)  3" High @ 100yds since first sighted in 2008. Mounted a Leupold 3x9 Vll & has not changed point of inpact. I even droped it off my bike & did not change.

When I first bought it,  I tried some factory loads & could not get less than 2" group @ 100yds. I discovered it had a very long throat. Hand loaded some ammo just off the lands & it gets less than 1"- 3 shot groups.

I use Federal match brass & primers with max load of Varget powder. Going to switch from Hornady SST to Hornady Interbond for Elk next year.

Varget is great stuff in the .308 Win.

You might research the Interbond.
While the SST shoots great, the Interbonds struggle to get close to the accuracy of the SST.
Been there done that, as well as others.
In the 308 Win, the SST should work just fine for Elk.

You might really look at the Accubonds..  They flat shoot in every gun I have loaded them up for.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

Jim,
I had not herd that about the Interbonds. I am a little concerned about the SST holding up. Two years ago I shot a forkie in the brisket @ 100yds & had core/jacket seperation. Bullet did travel almost though entire lenght of deer & he was DRT.

I have not had much luck with bonded bullets at 308 velocities beyond 250 yards.  Don't know what velocities you are loading at, but it is always a consideration when I choose a bullet for the 308. I know it is not a boattail configuration, but the Speer DeepCurl just might be the best of both worlds.  And all my 308's have liked the Speer bullets.  Though that one is new enough I have not had a relative or client try it on an animal yet.  On paper it sure looks promising.

My 308's have taken a good number of elk and bear over the years.  Usually with 150 grain Core-Lokt or Interlok bullets.  Although I tried to keep my hunters under 300 yards on shots at those animals.  My last disabled hunter took a very large bodied Rosy at 420 yards with a 150 grain Core-Lokt loaded at 2870 out of my 22" barreled Winchester 88 she used.  No heavy bone was hit and the bullet had a complete pass through.  Damage to the lungs was perfect and the bull made it less than 40 yards before going down.

I do like boattails and I do like Bonded bullets for the purpose they were designed for.  But, in the 308 sometimes the popular new design doesn't do things any better than the old tried and true.  Sometimes they can be even worse.  Watch closely the performance ratings at different velocities.  Unless you are planning on pounding some serious bone you may want to set some limitations on range if shooting Bonded or all Copper in the .308.

I have a safe full of magnums and the list is always growing.  But, the good old .308 is still my favorite.  I have never questioned it's capabilities when giving it to hunters in the lower 48.  It's boring to most.  But the success we have experienced with it has been anything but boring!

BTW - Congratulations on the deer!  Hope to see some pictures eventually.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

five years with five shots , if it aint broke dont fix it . It sounds like you stay within the capibillitys of the round and aslong as the bullets travelling above 1800fps it will do the job . congrats .

I also have a couple Magnum safe queens. I have two other .308's. A Remington 660 & 700 (LTR) Light Tatical Rifle.

I plan on doing some long range target shooting with the LTR next year. I am a member @ the Etonville gun club and it has a has 600yrd range.

Cant seem to get pic of 2012 forkie buck down loaded off of phone. Times out?

The entrance hole looks like GLOCKSTER's deer & exit hole about the size of a 50 cent piece. Perfect double lung shot @ 150yds. Hit rib on exit side.

Reloads get 2750FPS out of my 24" barrel.
