775 yd Coyote
« on: March 03, 2013, 07:30:21 PM »
I'll start by saying that this is a new personal best! Practice has been paying off. So now to the story.

I have been after these coyotes since october and have now killed 4 out of this valley. After the first three went down at close range over a span of about a month the others got a little shy/smart. I normally carry my 17 Rem and can't reach the shelf they always hang up on so I packed my Savage 12 LRP the 1 mile back to where these guys are hanging out. I have got to know there habits pretty well.

So i set up where i would have a good view of the valley and hit the female long howl on the foxpro and had no response. Waited a couple minutes and hit the female invitation howl with no response. I have had no luck lately with distress sounds but tried the lightning jack anyway no response. A couple minutes go by and i hear a really distant howl. I use the yip howls and wait. About 7 minutes later i get the loud close howls i'm looking for and find 2 dogs with my binos on the shelf they always stay on. I laser the close dog at 600. I dial for elevation and wind, get settled in and squeeze... Damn safety is on and the dog starts moving away along the rimrock. I turn on the challenge howl and it brings the dog to the edge where i can see it again. Laser it again, 775. She sits down and is staring at the foxpro. I look at the drop chart, dial up 19 minutes and 2 minutes left into the wind. She stands up, i make sure the safety is off this time, get settled in get my breathing under control, and squeeze. Whop she goes down in the scope. I'll just say i was super pumped. I know it is not a miracle shot but a coyote at 775 is something i will not forget.

My setup:
Model 12 LRP (6.5 Creedmoor)
Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 SFP
140 Hornady A-Max
42gr H4350
Caldwell XLA pivot bipod (13"-27")
Caldwel wind wizard
Sierra Infinity software
Vortex Ranger 1000 rangefinder
Foxpro Wildfire 2

I had just verified my drops to 850 about 2 hours before the shot on a our steel target range so i kinda cheated. I recommend getting out and matching your real world drops with your ballistics programs. Also if Calib happens to see this thread i want to say thanks. Its shoots like his that make us better shots. I can't wait for his next one.

I was editing that when you posted this. I'm still kinda excited. My previous best was 540 this year during Coyote Madness

I'm all for it. Our calves are starting to drop so they will be here for sure.
