How much ammo?
« on: March 14, 2013, 02:54:55 AM »
So I just went through my ammo for all my guns: shotgun, 9mm, .40 s&w, and 30-06. And I realized that besides 600 rounds of .40 I dont have a whole lot of ammo. I have 20 rounds of 9mm ball with maybe 20 hollow points; 20 rounds for the rifle; and maybe 75 mixed rounds for the shotgun eg. 2, 3, 7.5 (40 lead) and one ounce lead slugs.

So my question is how many rounds should one have for their guns; I know you can never have too many rounds, but what is the minimum that you should have?

Well you might want to wait to the prices go down before doing some restocking.

All the calibers you mentioned are available depending on where you live.  I know Skagit Arms has a bunch of those in and the local Wal Mart.  The calibers that are not in are .556 / .223. .308 and .22 shells.  They are coming in sporatically and going quickly.  .9mm and .45 will sit on the shelf for only a few days then it's gone until the next shipment.

If you have claim to have to much ammo the news media would have a field day with you.  :twocents:

I don't think there is a set amount to have. I did the same thing and went through my safe. I got 40 rds. of .270, 45 rds. of .243, 750 12 gauge shells, 350 rds. of .380, 1600 rds. of 9mm, and about 4000 rds. of .22. I will buy more if it's a good price.

Combat load for an infantry man in war is aprox(10 clips) 300 rnds of .223 and 4 clips of sidearm 90rnds 9mm.

Watch the 2012 version of red dawn, that should give you some idea's for an answer to your question.  If that is not enough think of our current dictator Mr O'bummer's attempts at disarming america.  Stock up while you can and it is still not manditory to give your name and address everytime you buy a box of 22 shells.  I believe that society as we know it is not going to survive the onslots of well meaning idiots.

If you just get a Mossberg 500 you can make that racking sound without any shells.  I'm sure that will be good enough.

If you are looking to reload, go to midway USA and get on there notification lists. I just got a bunch of bergers in 22 cal, some 44 cal hornady, 451 cal for my 460 sw and colt. And a bunch of 10 mm. You just have to act fast once you get the notification.

It's a pain but I have been able to get all I want. Including primmers and powder.

By the way bulkammo.com just had a bunch of centurion 22 ammo( made by augila)
For sale for 600$ for 5000 rounds. Kind of spendy but pretty accurate ammo.

you never have enough.  what gets me is the people trying to sell ammo for more than you can buy it in a store.  i just bought 2 boxes of 9 for $38 and 2 boxes of 40 for $40 in spokane and they are getting lots more.  they limit you to 2 per cal.  dont ask where.    mike w

I think a good number is at least 500 rounds for everything that you use. A few hunder for stuff you dont use that much and a few thousand 22 rounds.

Here's the thing with ammo...IT AIN'T GETTING ANY CHEAPER!!  When you find it for a good deal stock up.  I remember when 7&8 shot 12 ga cost 3 dollars a box of 25.  Now you can't find it for less than 5 / bx.  .22 ammo the same thing.  The stuff doesn't go bad if you store it appropriately.  Don't buy at the panic price, but when you find it at non-panic prices, stock up.  Only you can answer the question of how much you need.

I try to keep at least 100 loaded rounds on hand for each big game cartridge,1000 rounds for each varmint cartridge(.223 or22-250),the same for each AR-15. I have 1500 22mag,that's a little more then I intended to stock. 100 rounds for each of the pistols that don't see much use. I always keep 1000 45acp on hand,I shoot it at pins every Wed. Night. I shoot more 22lr than anything else and I'm starting to worry alittle, my stock is below 2000.

I was in Spokane recently and found a range that had a pallet of .22lr. They were selling them $30/brick. Not bad! But they were only selling one brick/person. Picked up 3. I think the ammo shortage is slowly getting better.
My 2cents!
