Gopro in a crab pot

Interesting video from inside a crab pot.  I’ll be making some modifications to my pots after watching this:

I wonder what the best way to modify the doors would be so the crabs could actually get in the pot?  Perhaps removing the bottom cross-bar so the legs don't get stuck when they try to climb through?

Not the smartest animals in the world, but very determined! I think that the best pots are the ones that sides drop down until you start pull the pot up. You just have to be sure to pull straight up.

I have a couple of those 360s to try out this year, what i'm wondering though is how long they will stay on the bait? How long are you guys soaking the wide open pots?

Depends if its a top loader or a flat ring trap. Ring traps i pull and rebait every 20 mins. Be careful not to handle the bouey and line too much. Get the trap set asap.

No kidding I have 6 that are similar to this one though I dont see a door on that far side, and I have one of the house shaped ones all have plenty of crab in them when I pull my traps.  Maybe this is just a special needs crab :dunno:

Lots of crab coming to the pot. Looks like a few keepers too! Are those some sort of surf perch after the bait? Lots of flounders!
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

Neat video.

I think I'm going to see about a square of thin, transparent plastic to mount to the door.  Part of the problem is that the door won't open because their claw goes through the gap. If the door were solid the whole door would open at once.  Not sure how that'd square with the regs calling for holes of X size.

Thats actually a good idea I would want to know if its legal as well, that would make a great mod to all my traps.

I agree. My cheap danielson pots often times out fish my more expensive ones. When they aren't getting stolen.

AAAAAAHHHHHH...that is one frustrating video... :yike:...I like the round traps with a funnel to the door which is easy to open.  drop that down to soak while I work the rings.  I have always wanted to see what goes on but now i'm frustrated watching them struggle to get in. thanks for the edumacation.
