Gonna add something different, i like to dip the meat into spicy cocktail sauce.......

H20 i cant believe you you grab/rip/tear a live animal apart in front of unsuspecting potential non crab eating people who vote, what kinda of message does that send to the non crab people. Think of the ethics man....what if some unsuspecting innocent youngster was to come across your pile of crab guts just left to rot? I telling biglukke...
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Good point Buck....I should be more sensative. Besides, it is already showing in my children. Yesterday on the way from daycare my boy was explaing to my daughter that the butcher has already "chopped up the bear" and we have to wait to eat it. She said she doesn't want to wait and "wants to eat him up" for dinner now. She is going to be ruthless.....I suppose 4 is a bit young for hunters ed. Granted...she would look awesome in the front seat of the pink FJ with her Hello Kitty camo AR-10....sipping some juice (zero fruit juice used in production) while road hunting with me.

steam em whole dip in your favorite flavor...butter garlic, cocktail sauce, straight up, mayo-hot mustard, teriyaki sauce then wash it down with a good white wine.

First off.....I don't like cooking them whole. Pull off top shell, break in half, clean out the gunk, boil for about 8 or 10 minutes....when it turns bright red and floats I call it done! If you like the "butter" to somewhat permeate the meat of the body go ahead and boil it whole. Or.....do one whole and one spit and see what you like the best. I prefer to clean them at the dock which leads to less mess at home and a cleaner boil.
There goes all the great meat flavorings by cleaning them first  . I've had crab cooked after cleaning and they don't have the fraction of the flavor that they should. If you're a tried and true crab lover you would eat the "crab butter" inside the shell as well...  yum!

I can't remember what Chinese restaurant I ate at in the International district, but they served Dungeness crab in some kind of sauce and the body shell was grilled gut side down until nice and brown, it was delicious!

What do you mean better than salt water? Some of us prefer keeping the crab intact, whole and boiled in salt water, clean them after that and do what you wish with the insides.

Take back sea water with you to cook them in, way better than water with salt thrown in. Throw some butter in the water also. Boil away!

Perfection

I just take a big bucket of seawater home with me from the marine, lots of good seasonings in it....   :puke:   :chuckle:

I used to cook them whole, but i don't eat huge amounts of crab and my family does not either.  I discovered that cooking time is less and the crab keeps better (doesn't turn black) if I pop the shell and remove the gills before cooking.  I don't even salt my water, just bring to a boil and drop the crab in for 7 minutes, maybe a minute or two longer if more than one or two crabs in the pot.

As far as popping the shell, I used to pull the tail off (weiner for some?) and then pry the shell from the legs with my thumbs running the risk of getting grabbed while prying.  Now, I either use a thin cleat at the dock or the pointing end of a pick.  Hold the crab upside down two handed with the face toward you, legs tucked in.  Then, ram the cleat/pick into the crab's mouth trying not to stick it into the meat or through the top of the shell.  Lift up on the back legs and the shell should just pop off easily, then pull the tail off and remove the gills.  Be careful as they can still pinch you for a bit until the legs figure out they are actually dead.   :yike:

Another tip for the less experienced... if one grabs you, don't jump around trying to fling it off (I know, hard to do when that thin vise grip is trying to cut the end of your thumb off plus your "friends" will just laugh at you more later), instead lower the right-side-up crab to something solid and it will let go as soon as it has support under its legs.

thats why i only use pots that have 360 degree access

Those 360 traps Suck and that is why no company makes them anymore.  I never fell for that gimmick.

How is the crabbing in Spokane?  :chuckle:

I like them cooked whole and cleaned.  I generally base my decision on whether I can fit all the crabs in my turkey cooker whole or if I need to clean them to get them in there.  Ideally, I have too many to cook whole.
