Carrying a handgun while archery hunting

This is my first year archery hunting (I have hunted with a rifle for 30+ years), and I'm thinking about buying a handgun to have while hunting.  I am curious how many of you do this or don't, and why.

I don't feel it necessary while hunting. Learn to be proficient with your bow. If it makes you feel better carrying one go for it. Only time I carry one is while scouting.

The woods are full of tweakers, and many of them hunt as well, when not raiding your camp, your vehicle or you.

   get your CLP, choose a caliber and frame that suits you and your needs, and have it w/ you always.

I do. It's a good piece of mind not only for me but my wife at home. Knowing I have some good backup in the woods, including pepper spray, from with 2 or 4 legged critters is important.

Luckily I have yet to have to use it.

You can handle any problem with a bow that you can with a handgun. It isn't like you are going for a walk down rainier ave after dark. Like I said in my post above, if it MAKES you feel better by all means do it.

Totally disagree with you Hugh. If I suddenly have to deal with a tweeker in the woods drawing my pistol and pulling the trigger is much faster than bringing up your bow, knocking an arrow, draw, aim and release. And that is only if you happen to have your release already strapped on. Not to mention a gun is a bigger deterrent to a POS than a bow.

I agree. I've tracked a bear I shot with a bow trough thick brush... That was enough for me. Not to mention tweakers  and other dangerous two legged creatures.

Neither have I, but better safe than sorry. But I agree it's a personal choice.
