State land is always open in the toutle and no fire has ever been started. Why not just have the land on the other side of the river walk in only?
State land is open--BUT Weyco. will close the gate so you need to fly.  They do it rarely now since they hear from irate people who demand easement to our public land every time they close it.  When they close it this year, be sure to contact the DNR and demand easements to this public land since there aren't any.

Except the thousands upon thousands of acres of state land that isn't land locked...

Not in the Toutle there isn't.
I understand it varies by area. Where I hunt there isn't any land locked state land...

The signs are put up as a courtesy. There are phone numbers you can call to verify access.

Honestly there are signs up in certain areas that are more than 2 years old

In past years I have actually seen the signs before they update their hotline.  Ive called to see if they were closed and it hadn't been updated for almost a month so I pack up and get to the gate and there they are, FIRE DANGER SIGNS.  To be safe, I would pay attention to both signs and hotline.  Would suck to get caught and have to play the ignorant card because you didn't check :twocents:

You do know  it's common for Weyco to leave those signs up all year? I have Weyco fire danger signs next to my house from two years ago.

Not in this county.  Most DNR/WDFW land here is controlled by private timber.  There's only a handful of acres of public land in the Toutle unit that isn't landlocked.  I suppose you could backpack in from Kalama to the Toutle, or hire a helicopter...

PS Weyco. closed everything today
Quote from the Daily News today:  "Weyco has closed its access corridors on the 1900 rd, which provides a route to the Green River hatchery (public), and the 4100 and 4200 rds, which provides access to state land between the north and south forks of the Toutle River".

The real issue isn't fire danger closures, but the fact that they could do this at any time, for any reason, and for any price.   You pay Weyco. to get to our public lands.  You pay them to fish our salmon and hunt our game.  When are these 'public' agencies going to wake up and get legal access to our lands?

Good chunk of State Land off of Rock Creek Rd in south part of Toutle Unit.  No gates and decent amount of elk.  Hunted it last year with cow tag when all the Weyco land was closed.

You're right,  there are a few pieces in the south.  (I'm north side biased living in Toutle)  Maybe we need a list with each acre id'ed.

Thanks for the info, I have a cow tag this year and was planning on going down to the 4200 rd this sat-sun to scout with my kids. From what the Paper says the 4200 and all the land behind it is closed to motor vehicls.

Motorized and non-motorized public access to Weyerhaeuser Co.’s Mount St. Helens Tree Farm is now closed, including for hunters. Weyerhaeuser also closed its access corridors on the 1900 road, which provides a route to the Green River hatchery, and the 4100 and 4200 roads, which provides access to state land between the north and south forks of the Toutle River.

I'm going to check out rock creek tomorrow.

I have no information but my gut says they will.  Start praying for some rain.  July was the driest July in the past 50 years.

You can still get into the state land up the 4200rd, but there is a gate on the 4100rd just after the split.
