CleuElum Ranger station will give you maps where you can ride . you must stay on designated trails or green dot roads in state land , not for use in national forest inless on posted trails. you can't go off road or trail in Washington inless your on private property. some road in the Okanogan are open to orv use . make sure orv tabs are current and the tow rig has a discover pass . they can be a great tool when used right but nothing beats a good pair of legs.have fun.
Ok good to know. Exactly why I made this thread. :)

Not sure if this got posted in the backcountry thread on accident? but if you're riding a motorized vehicle into where you hunt it's not a backcountry hunt
I figured I would be getting more into the backcountry with it :chuckle: Guess It could have went somewhere else haha. It IS an "off road vehicle"  :dunno:
'

Back country doesn't really mean hiking in 100 miles. You can get into back country on roads too. I do.

That's a matter of opinion on the definition of backcountry I guess. I just don't get how it's backcountry if you can drive to it?
Well you can take an ORV places a normal vehicle cant go. It doesn't even have to be a trail or a road. Some places you can drive that thing right through the woods and over brush.
I do understand what your saying though.

Going offroad, through the woods etc is a big no,no. Don't do it. You'll be in it deep if you get caught. This is what gives us a bad name. Cows do more damage than any ORV.
I didn't mean I WOULD be. I just said that Its possible. Not legal, or ethical. That's all.
One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.

I had no idea such a law was passed, I know over the past 5 years the areas I frequent have all been shut down to quads, still ok for jeeps and motorcycles, this is good news to me, I would love to be able to cruise down to trail heads on my quad instead of in my powerstroke.

HB 1632 is what you might want to read up on, it's the Washington State bill Inslee signed.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

My hunting partner has one.... have to wear earplugs to keep from going deaf when driving in it.
I'd be worried I'd scare all animals away!   I'm going to install a Kolpin add-on muffler to see if it helps... but at present I don't think we'll take it anywhere during Elk season.  It will be nice to help get the meat out though  :)

Old enough to know better.
Young enough to go for it.

That's why we were wondering about, using to pack in/pack out things or ride one up to a location and hike miles down to the second one... still trying to figure it all out lol.

Page 10, line 18 of HB 1632

(d)(i) A person may not operate a wheeled all-terrain vehicle on a
19 public roadway within the boundaries of a city or town, not including
20 nonhighway roads and trails, unless the city or town by ordinance has
21 approved the operation of wheeled all-terrain vehicles on city or town
22 roadways, not including nonhighway roads and trails.

The entire bill, for your consideration...

More fun from page 12 of the bill.  Have fun getting all this legally binding paperwork together and convincing your dealer to sign off on it, likely opening themselves up to liability issues...

5 (b) A person who operates a wheeled all-terrain vehicle upon a
6 public roadway must provide a declaration that includes the following:
7 (i) Documentation of a safety inspection to be completed by a
8 licensed wheeled all-terrain vehicle dealer or repair shop in the state
9 of Washington that must outline the vehicle information and certify
10 under oath that all wheeled all-terrain vehicle equipment as required
11 under this section meets the requirements outlined in state and federal
12 law. A person who makes a false statement regarding the inspection of
13 equipment required under this section is guilty of false swearing, a
14 gross misdemeanor, under RCW 9A.72.040;
15 (ii) Documentation that the licensed wheeled all-terrain vehicle
16 dealer or repair shop did not charge more than fifty dollars per safety
17 inspection and that the entire safety inspection fee is paid directly
18 and only to the licensed wheeled all-terrain vehicle dealer or repair
19 shop;
20 (iii) A statement that the licensed wheeled all-terrain vehicle
21 dealer or repair shop is entitled to the full amount charged for the
22 safety inspection;
23 (iv) A vehicle identification number verification that must be
24 completed by a licensed wheeled all-terrain vehicle dealer or repair
25 shop in the state of Washington; and
26 (v) A release signed by the owner of the wheeled all-terrain
27 vehicle and verified by the department, county auditor or other agent,
28 or subagent appointed by the director that releases the state from any
29 liability and outlines that the owner understands that the original
30 wheeled all-terrain vehicle was not manufactured for on-road use and
31 that it has been modified for use on public roadways.

I belong to 3 ATV clubs in eastern Washington. This is you typical mumble jumble talk from the gubmint. Don't forget, the shops that will sign your paper work are all avid ATV/motorcycle/snowmobilers.

This is no different than having a semi truck, that I paid for, to have a shop certify that my 15,000 lb semi truck was road safe as directed by ALL states in the union.

It's nothing to worry about.

Can this be explained in a nutshell?
For instance, can I ride a quad on DNR roads say in Tahuya state forest?
How bout the FS roads in Little Natches, Rimrock ect?

As long as I have met the registration, inspection criteria?

In a nutshell, no.

The legislation passed opens the door to the possibility that you will be able to do that soon, but no, you cannot do it right now.  The biggest reason why is one very specific clause in the legislation...

Page 10, line 18 of HB 1632
