If you're a hunter, calling wolves is illegal.  If you're a wolf loving greenie, calling wolves is ok.  :twocents:

I would call Olympia and ask!

http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=77.08.010

RCW 77.08.010
Definitions.

(65) "To hunt" and its derivatives means an effort to kill, injure, capture, or harass a wild animal or wild bird.

If you're a hunter, calling wolves is illegal.  If you're a wolf loving greenie, calling wolves is ok.  :twocents:

 :o

That depends on what the definition of harass may be and exactly what you intend to do if a wolf answers or calls in? If you snap a photo is that harassment, I don't think so. People snap photos of wildlife within parks in WA every year and they are not written a ticket. We post photos of wildlife year around on the forum. Is simply the act of calling considered harassing? I think a person needs to clarify by calling enforcement in Olympia.

I could not re-find it but there was a discussion about calling elk for some one else and if you needed a lic or not. I searched the elk hunting and Gen topic but could not find it is not very old. 3 weeks max.  :twocents:

You can bet they will tell you it is illegal even if there is not a clear law stating it.  Pursuing and harassing definitions are kind of vague.  If a guy was out there bugling in bulls, calling predators or birds for photos without a license Im sure he would be just fine but since its a wolf we are asking about.  The game officer would surly write you a ticket then it would be up to lawyers and judges to sort it out.

They still do howling surveys.

Quote
Dear Mr. Kain,

We will be happy to send you copies of photos of the wolves in Washington that were from remote cameras or from the brief capture and radio-collaring of the male wolf, but it would be illegal to call and locate them for purposes of photo opportunities.  The wolf is an endangered species in Washington under both state and federal law.  The federal listing includes the western 2/3 of Washington, and they are state listed throughout Washington.  This activity (calling wolves in for purposes of photographing them) would be considered harassment and would not be conducive to protecting the wolves from disturbance; repeat calling can also push wolves out of their use areas. We appreciate your interest in this state endangered species, and request that you not attempt to call wolves for photo opportunities in Washington.

If your using a call to take pictures, how can it be construed as hunting or harassing?   :dunno:

If calling for wolves pushes wolves off why haven't WDFW etc. mentioned this method for driving livestock killing wolves off the livestock?

I wonder if they are more concerned about others finding out just how many wolves there really are in WA.

My neighbor had wolves after her housecat the other night about 3;00 in the morning, I guess I will tell her to start calling them so they will run off.

I don't suppose it would hurt to do howling serveys, that way at least we can estimate where the wolves/wolf packs are as long as there is no picture taking going on it should be ok? :chuckle:

There was a news story last year from The Wedge (before they "wiped them out")  Can't find the footage now, but the bio up there was howling and got a response.

That story was posted on here somewhere.

There are still wedge pack wolves and they are still killing cattle this year.
Watch the look on his face when all the wolves start howling.  :chuckle:

If you have no weapon and are not pursuing with hounds, I don't see how you can be classified as hunting. The greenies go howling for wolves all the time and that does not seem to be illegal.

I think most of the folks that you are talking about who have bragged publicly about howling for wolves had a bio either doing the howling or there with them.

From a prosecution standpoint, it seems there would be difficulty in convicting someone for this type of crime. What is the burden of proof to separate someone who is out truly trying to howl wolves in from the drunk next to the campfire who's howling at the moon?
Which side are you on if neither will claim you?

That's the one

I was lurking around in the CNF in 111 yesterday and didn't call to any wolves.  I did however stumble across a few head of cattle that were throwing out intermittent wolf calls
