.243 520 yards? YUUUUUUP!
« on: October 13, 2013, 07:46:02 PM »
Little sister flat out hammered this joker at 520 yards with my custom .243 shooting 95gn Berger VLD'S scope is a 6.5-20 Leupold with a custom turret matched to my load. Im sure im gonna get bashed but bash away I know what this gun and shooter was capable of and the Berger bullet performed flawlessly.

Great job...I tell people all the time that there are a thousand different long range rifles, but they don't make the owner long range shooters...That kinda skill comes with practice..again great job
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me

It's not the gun in most cases, it's the shooter.  .243 will take down most game.  The best part about it is you do't get retinal detachment from it as it won't donkey kick you.

I wasn't a big fan of long shots on deer with a .243 until I bought one for my daughter and took the head off of a coyote at 500 yards with it.  Now it is my favorite reach- out coyote gun.  Great gun and great shooting from your sister!  Congrats to her!

you will be happy with them im sure. This is the 4th buck shot with this same gun with the same load and never once had any issues. My nephew shot his 1st 2 bucks with it the 1st being 376yards on the 1st shot and it hunched up and stumbled to 404 where he hammered him again and dropped it.
It does a number on coyotes too! :)

1-9.25 my dads factory chambered 6mm with the same barrel will not stabilize the same bullet. My .243 I can get the vld's to touch the lands where he cannot.

Not to highjack....buuuttt, are available .243 factory loads out of a 22" bbl effective to 300 yds on most deer, assuming a broadside shot?

Absolutely! Just pick a heavier bullet designed for deer sized game. Not a 55 grain varmint bullet or the like.

Great shot. No bashing here as I really love the Berger VLDs as well. I've taken several elk and deer and a bear with the 300WSM 168 VLDs and they perform flawlessly. From the looks of the heart you definitely have the load dialed in!

Great job.  I killed a buck many years ago well over 500 yards with a 243.  Great deer gun.  As far as shooting long range, like stated above, it's the shooter, not the gun and it looks to me like she can shoot!

I just aquired a Rem 700 lefty in .243 and hope to so some coyote and deer hunting with it

He also has a Remington only in 6mm with the factory 1-9.25 twist. My gun also has a factory Rem barrel only its a heavy barrel and the gun was built by Gordy Gritters so the chamber is alot tighter than my old mans 6mm which will not stabilize the 95gn VLD.

My gun is also a switch barrel, so its also a 22-250, but I just got another 22-250 so I could just leave my scope and everything set up.

You'll get ZERO negative comments on a  perfectly heart shot  deer at 520 yards, only accolades, shows you and your gunner were both properly prepared through research/practice.I've read many times where the .243 is a marksmans rifle.

Thanks guys, I thought for sure I would get some bashing.
