45-70
« on: October 24, 2013, 07:03:00 PM »
Im headed to Cle Elum area to Elk hunt for the first time. Im not too familiar with the area but really want to take my Marlin 45-70. I hand loaded some 350gn stompers that are good for 1875fps. What I dont know is what is the average shot distance, should I just stick with the 06 for this year?

Thanks guys

I would stick with the 06.  That's what i hunt with for deer and elk and never fails.  45-70 is overkill and more than likely you wont shoot that round as well when you have a split second shot, which you will more than likely.  My hunting partner has 45-70 and all he has gotten so far is "scoped" while shooting at a cow LOL.  Good thing was you could tell it was him shooting by the sound (CANON) :)

Depends on what you practice at.  I hunt with a 300 mag and a 45-70.  I practice with the 45-70 out to 300yds.  I load a 350gr going about 1900fps for the 45-70, seems to work well. I do jump between guns all season depending on weather and area I plan to hunt that day.  There is open areas and timber to hunt up there. Bring both, the 06 is a solid option also.  Good luck.

Use the 45/70! It ought to be good to at least 200 yards. Cool gun!

45-70 overkill? And not a gun for split second shots? :dunno:  Great hunting round and fun gun to hunt with...I say do it and have fun!

Thanks for the replies fellas. Im gonna go with the 06 just because of the range. I dont know the area so hopefully next year I can take the big bore.

I too was confused about over kill and the quick shot... hell i can aquire a targer alot sooner with my lever than with the scope. So far as over kill... lol its pretty much perfect imo
