North Bend WA - Bull Elk plays with Dog
« on: December 04, 2013, 12:28:34 PM »
I ran across this on someones Facebook.  Nothing more rewarding than seeing the barriers that are often ignored in the animal kingdom.  It would be real interesting to be in the head of both the dog and the elk to see whether it is purely fun and games as it appears to be or if there is a little bit of taking a stand and defending going on.  Warms my heart either way!  :)

Looks like that young bull was toying with the dog just for fun!

What a large and tasty playmate

Maybe the dog can bring him back in a few years  :archery_smiley:

its all fun and games until your dog catches a hoof or gets stomped... theres videos out there of what deer can do to a dog, an elk is another few hundred pounds behind that hoof if things get sideways.  :bdid:

Looks to me like those two were respecting each others distance.  More of that on the dogs end.  Any dog that truly tries to take on a deer or elk is most likely going to lose a battle more sooner than later.  We lost two of our dogs because one of them took a liking to chasing four legged creatures, the other was along just because he was a buddy.  You should see what a bullet does to a dog!  :'(

Saw a similar thing with a wolf and a horse north of Riggins.  When it got more serious several horses showed up and the wolf evaporated.

That's awesome! Up by Elbe once and watched a pup yote and a calf elk play tag! Both Mama's just sat and watched, herd wasn't bothered a bit. In a pasture right by the road, several cars pulled over and watched.

Imo the dog wasn't playing... Just knew it was beat when push came to shove.... A friends pitbull (which I never liked) chased a mature buck out of his Belfair yard years ago during prime rutting activity for the area... We lost him... Came back two days later barley clinging to life... He was so gored and stomped there wasn't a spot on the dog that wasn't bruised or bloodied... Amazed he made it back home... Had to be just by smell cause he only had one eye left that was swollen shut... He couldn't watch while I put him down and dug the hole... (lucky he had a tractor or I would've thrown him in the ditch... I hated that dog) Never liked pits since.... Ruined me... Daughter was more upset when she thought she was getting one for Christmas this year from a friend.... Not in my house... Or on my property... Or a Blue Heeler... Hate those things... Neighbors has it's final warning.... Should've done it seven warnings ago...

That was fun to watch. It looks like a big salt lick down where the elk is going in and out of the bushes. Would love to have elk in my yard  :chuckle:
