Double Goldeneye Surprise
« on: December 14, 2013, 04:26:55 PM »
The dog was looking a little bored so I decided to go down to the bay and see if anything was around.  The last couple times down there, there were ducks well within range but no shotgun in my hands.

As we snuck to the shore, I saw a GE dive so we moved up and got ready.  When he popped up he saw us and got two flaps off the water when I thumped him.  As I was starting to send the pup, another popped up to my right, got about four flaps off the water and I managed to drop him as well.  Amber did a great retrieve on both birds.

To my surprise, one was a Common and the other a Barrow's.  Wish I could afford/have a place to put a nice duo species mount.  My first entries on the sea duck card.

Thanks all, I think I see some curried duck in the future as I have a moose and my daughter's first deer to get taxidermied. I still have my first two Oldsquaw in the freezer from a bunch of years ago so that is probably a sentence of oblivion for any new ducks.   :(

Is it common for the two types of Goldeneye to hang together?  I've never really been able to tell the difference before now.

One of the guys I duck hunt with shot the same pair last year. He had them both mounted together. Cool birds but I hate skinning them.

I think they were the tightest skinned ducks I have ever done, but man, they sure tasted good made into Salsbury steak.

I wish I could afford more mounts as they are gorgeous but I have a couple of Oldsquaw in the freezer and I'm trying to figure out how to pay for last year's moose and my daughter's first deer from this year.

Very nice Loki!  That would be a cool mount with one sub-species besides the other.  One of these days I'll have a mount done with Goldeneye as they are a cool looking bird.

PS. Don't forget, we still need to meet up one of these days.  I have a package for you in my freezer...

They are pretty birds.  They were very skittish and never had an opportunity for a shot this year.

That's an awesome photo. To catch the hen barrows and common to is pretty sweet. I love shooting Goldies and they decoy incredibly well. The only barrows I have shot came into common goldeneye decoys so I would imagine they aren't to picky.

Great photo catching a double/double on the GE's. With a decoy in the background none the less.
Good job on getting the double lokidog!

It's been my experience that when I started getting waterfowl "stuffed" that I can't stop until I get "our" slam. This year was a rest year (currently have 5 at the taxidermist) but, next year is gonna be more focused on a couple more for the case. Happy hunting!
