how old is it to late?

Wondering how old do you think a dog can be before its to late to try and train a dog?
I have a 4-5 year old weim that is in great shape has shown signs of having the Bird instinct.  is it worth the time and money to train him?  My wife was walking the dog the other day at the ocean when my dog stopped in his tracks and ran into the tall grass a few seconds later a phesant flies out . She called me right away in her excitement.

Why not take him to a trainer for an evaluation and see how it goes?

Almost all breeds have some instinctual point in them. Same reason you stop when you sense something wrong and the hair raises on the back of your neck once and a while. That saves you from walking into danger. This can usually be brought out of any breed with some training.

There is a big difference between teaching a dog to stand game versus one that points.

As for the OP I am guessing it depends on the dog and how much patients and knowledge the trainer has. Certainly different dogs will do better at later stages of life. Give the dog the chance see what it does, watching a dog do what it is bred to do is one of the coolest things about hunting with a dog. Good luck to you if you decide to do it. Keep us posted.
