Man Phool, I love your photos.  One question, why are you always blessed with blue skies on your hunts?   ;)

I think the point about bow vs rifle is key in making the decision to tag a younger or questionable deer on day 1.  I don't rifle hunt anymore (though I suppose I would in certain situations) so for me any of these bucks would be worthy of a stalk with a bow.  Considering the stalk/success ratio needed to finally get one that sticks, I would be playing those odds in hopes that the one that panned out was notable.  If it turned out that I got a gimme on a smaller but representative typical 4x4 early on, so be it.  I'd be very happy with that too.  I like holding out but my time is always limited so I'm more of an opportunist these days.  I don't define success by killing an animal, but out of state hunts aren't cheap so I like to put meat in the freezer if possible.

I guess I'm a hypocrit too because I passed a clueless raghorn Oregon bull at 12 feet on day 1, only to have eaten my tag due to an unexpected early departure home.  :chuckle:

My buddy and I talked about this very thing on our East Montana hunt (first time hunting there for both of us).  If we had been bowhunting, better than half of the bucks we saw would have been deemed "shooters".  The deer were so alert (visually) and always so well positioned (topographically) that making a stalk to within bow range would have been a major challenge.  In fact, once we got within 300 yards, a doe almost invariably spotted us.  Would be a blast bowhunting them out there, but bring extra hair... cause you'll be pullin' lots out... :chuckle:

Maybe its because we are hunting deer and not ducks :chuckle:

Seriously though, we had few clouds the entire time this year until the drive home. There is a reason why they call it "Big Sky Country" and the blues quickly give way to red and orange in the evening, I wish I had a bigger buck for this shot but I'll take it.

Gotta love the rut. A doe pissed on the ground and this guy walked over to the spot, sniffed and then went nuts.
