This book is a great read and full of insight for even the most seasoned blacktail hunter. I have many hunting traditions and reading this book on the eve of every dear season is one of my favorites

It's a good book, but to follow Boyd's methods, you pretty much have to scout year around, and to hunt his way you need a LOT of patience. More patience than I have.

Scouting quite a bit only helps your success...and having patience is a key to my success....reading this book has helped me score on some nice bucks...I have combined his style with mine and its worked for me...here's 2 bucks in the following 2 years after reading the book from the same spot....his tips do help...and remember you can't shoot a big buck if you shoot a small one opening day

That's pretty much what I found, also.

You broke Boyd's rule #1 and hunted near a clearcut
The book is full of great information from the expert. Great bucks btw.

Bullkllr, exactly what I was going to say. Boyd says to NEVER hunt clearcuts.

With that being said I've killed lot of bucks near/in cuts.....also i hunt older clear cuts with lots of cover...they can be just as productive as big timber...you can still hunt those also...but like I said I've taken his style and combined it with mine and it works for me

Also I have still hunted big timber using the same tactics as boyd does and walked up on a huge 20-23"  5x4 blacktail with no clear cuts for at least 3/4 of a mile and an elk tag in my pocket  so his way does work but like bobcat said you need the patience for that style of hunting

The way I see it is you have to live in the middle of the area you going to hunt and you don't have a life.
I am a meat hunter, so I shoot the first legal deer I see. Once home, I toss the antlers into the trash.
