Rocky Ford Creek... Anyone?

I've heard it's a fun fishery. What kind of access is there to the upper end?

Lots of easy access.  There's even a handicap accessible dock.  There is a shop in Ephrata, I think it's called the Desert Fly Angler, or something like that.  He should be able to help you get started.

Take heavy tippets.  The fish are huge!

It is. Arm to arm combat catch and release fly fishing only.

Lots of access. Only pattern I have EVER had success with is a San Juan worm. They have SEEN every pastern thousands of times.....very picky and VERY strong fish. Good luck!

I have been there and been all by my lonesome. If you can, go mid week and you should be fine.

I've fished it a bunch. I've been all alone and I've been in sight of no less than a dozen people. No wading in the water allowed. Tons of big, strong, educated, line shy fish. SJ's work along with tiny egg scuds. Light green color. I'd try really hard to fish it with a 12' 5x leader with a 6x flouro tippet and you might have a chance as long as you've got a good drag so the pigs don't break the tiny tippet. Don't kill them overfighting them in the middle of summer in warm water. Shadows will be what gets you whether it is your shadow or your line's shadow over the fish. Sunup or sundown will be the best times to hit it. It will be weed choked this time of year. Best time to fish it is before the water heats up in summertime. It even fishes well in winter. I'd pass it up for other options in the middle of August. Watch out for buzzworms.

A scud allowed to naturally drift in front of the feeders and then using the tinest of a twitch to your line often is enough to entice a strike.

If you just have to go ... Go on a full moon night, full floating line, large black leach or mouse pattern fished on or just under surface... Shhhhh, don't tell anyone this secret tip...

Be sure to watch for rattlesnakes this time of year. I have heard they can be real nasty during the heat. We usually fish it in the winter when it is super cold, still quite a few people there but fun fishing for sure. Good luck.
