mini van owners -- MPG please
« on: August 18, 2014, 03:08:00 PM »
What is a realistic expectation for fuel economy from a minivan? I've thought of selling our gas thirsty monster SUV because I heard a friend saying they get about 20-26 in their minivan. That's about double what we get in the SUV. But then again, we don't drive the SUV much--12,000 miles a year.

Thanks.

Our V6 Grand Caravan hovers between 16-18.

Fueleconomy.gov has a page where users report their MPG. I think it is pretty representative of what I have got in my vehicles http://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/MPG.do?action=browseList

What? The federal government got something right? Hang on, I gotta bookmark this one...

Looks as though the van I would consider gets 19-24 between city, highway, and combined.  We get about 12-13 in the city and 15-16 on the highway in the gas chugging monster SUV. Last couple fillips were 10 in the city and 13 on the highway though  >:(  (That's with a 75mph posted speed limit). Maybe I should check my tire pressure, air filter, etc.

So @ $3/gallon, I guess we're burning $1,200 a year that we could save by owning a minivan ($100 a month), but would give up the convenience of a little more seating, 4wd if we ever want it (but honestly rarely need), as well as mom needing to get over the "I'm a minivan mom now  :( " adjustment.
