First legal bull seen is going down... Tag notched 5x4 Roosie!
« on: October 07, 2014, 11:53:53 PM »
After hunting hard all weekend in Nonurbiz creek with Nailbender for muzzy elk final put down a good eating bull.  We had a couple close encounters with bigger bulls Sat but hard to get a shot in reprod!  We hiked many miles on foot covering ground and calling.  Mid day we took a lunch break in a reprod cut and decided to start hiking again and jumped a herd with a couple of nice bulls.  The bulls antlers were smacking branches and trees as they came there the reprod.  I circled them and had a couple of cows and a spike cross in front of me and then bigger bulls were coming but stopped and knew something was up and crossed a different path then the cows and spike.  So then had nailbender circle them and I pushed through the reprod and nothing until I was about 100 yards in the brush from Nailbender.  I heard a nice low bugle and chuckle from about 300yards from my location straight at Nailbender.  So I started cow calling and ended up calling a nice 5 / 6 point into about 20 yards of him and he just couldn't get a clean shot through the thick stuff.  If it had come into the opening where it was clear it would have been about 5yard shot no kidding I was listening to the branches and brush as he moved in to the calls and heard the crashing sound of him leaving!  It made for a pretty exciting 30 minutes any how.  So the rest of the day was checking a few cams to see if the elk were visiting them and they were pretty active on them with multiple big bulls and a small ones so we sat by the camera for that night nothing.  Sunday was a slow one and heard and saw zero elk but got in a good hike.  Decide to go out for a morning hunt Monday and check another area I got my buddy an elk in last year.  So sat against my lucky tree and watched a swampy area for about an hour used some cow piss spray and cow calls but the sun was coming out and I figured I would go check the cam to see if anything had been around in the area lately.  So 10 minutes later I am walking back to my tree and about 20yards from my spot i was just sitting this bull hops up out from behind my tree and scares the *censored* out of me!  I inhale my reed, gag on it and cough it out of my throat and the bull takes off.  I make some what of a cow call with my voice and he stops in his track at 85yards and lay the smack down on him with my Thompson Center 50 Cal Black Diamond, 290 grain Barnes TMZ bullet with 100 grains of Prodex pellets.  He goes about 80yards and piled up.  One shot right behind the shoulder double lung.   He is not the biggest of bulls but should be a great eating bull.  Being that I am limited on time to hunt this year I said I would shoot the first legal bull I had in range so he was the chosen one! Had him in the cooler 3 hours later after a short pack out.  Thanks to my buddy for driving out to come help pack out the quarters.  We got him done in 3 loads.  Two quarters on the pack board on my two trips and one heavy bag of backstraps/filets/ and burger meat on his and we both carried the head out holding the antlers.  Cooked him up last night hoping that he would be a little more tender then the last few bigger bulls!  Was great tasting but a little tougher then I hope all in all it was a great morning and now back to work!

This bullet has acted the same way for my buddies bull last season in the same spot!  Bullet looks the same on his bull it hit the rib on the way in cracked 3 on the entry and 4 on the exit side and both time found it sticking out of exit side of the hide.  Another friend had the same expansion on his bull three years ago and I made the switch after seeing there performance on animals.  I can only load two bullets through barrel before I have to run a patch or what I do is shoot an all lead sabot with ballistic tip 180 or 230 grain dead accurate bullet for my 3 and 4 if needed.  But haven't needed a second shot with these bullets!
