Online photo storage
« on: December 11, 2014, 08:54:16 AM »
Just curious what everyone uses for online photo storage.  I need to decide on something, before my cpu, fails.  I back everything on a hard drive but wanted to look at some online storage.  I don't do much editing, etc. just storage!

2 seperate two terabyte hard drives. One for using daily, and the other for copying the first and is stored in a safe.

If you have ever had a hard drive fail, you will never make that mistake again. $$$$$$$$

I use Carbonite for all my files. $60/year. Externals are great unless the house burns down, or you fail to backup frequently.

I plan on getting another external hard drive and keeping it in the safety deposit box at the bank and rotate out monthly or so. Like Phool I have 2 now that I back up to but will add a 3rd soon.

With that many hard drives, why not back up to a cloud service?

Mainly  because I don't even know how that cloud thing works. A bit fearful I guess.  Hell, I barely know how a hard drive works

I don't like the idea of "someone" else having access to all of my images, especially the government.

How much are you trying to store/backup?

There are a number of viable cloud based services and highly secure but have a monthly charge associated with them. The upside to cloud based options (if you didn't already know) is the versatility. You can access your files from anywhere you have a connection. The upside to an external drive like others mention is cost. The cost for great external drives with beefy capacity are relatively cheap nowadays (few hundred bucks or so) but you need the drive with you in order to access any images.

Once you have a good sense of your own requirements then you'll simply need to select the service or products best suited to meet your needs.
- Your budget
- Capacity of storage you need
- Accessibility requirements

Good luck!

Well of course, :chuckle: but the government need not know anything personal that may be in images, guns you are holding for example, none of their business, etc. :twocents:
