Lake Stevens, Kokes, 2015
« on: April 15, 2015, 09:06:28 AM »
Went out last Sunday for a few hours for my first trip out on the lake. Didn't expect much and didn't catch much. Saw a few jumpers, saw a few fish netted. We had a decent one on pretty quick after letting lines out. It hit a dick nite dodger with a mini green hoochie, gold blade, tipped with krill scented corn. This was a long line release. Had a few other bumps but nothing netted. Overall it was a nice first trip out. I'll be back out again this Saturday morning with my son. If you see a white North River, gray top, give me a wave.

I havent fished Lake Stevens and dont know if I will.  Kind of far run for me.  I kok fish mostly Lake Meridian and America Lake.  I havent been out yet, I had back surgery about 2 weeks ago so it is going to be a late start for my kok fishing this year.  But I can't wait, I had been tieing leaders nd some of my home made flies and lures I use.  I am glad to hear you are already out there getting into them, keep it up......whack and stack!!!

I might have seen you. I drove up there with my daughter on Sunday to scout it out. The water looked good. Good luck next weekend if you get back out there.

Thanks. I was out with my brother in law. There was a rowing regatta thing going on so the town launch was a zoo. I think this weekend will be decent with a sunny next few days.

I'll throw my pole in the truck. Was thinking of dropping the summer boat in lake stevens for its first trip of the season this weekend.

Well, we went out, lost a handfull and did bring in a few. The boys did all the work. They did most of the driving, took the rod whenever a fish hit, all I did was do the net work. Had a good time and what a great morning on the water.

Got it. Here is where I think I'm missing some fish. I usually run the leaders a little longer on the spinners and could shorten them up. My speed sometimes gets a little to slow and I don't get good action on the dodger. I'm trying to work that balance between speed and lure action.

nice job man. I was out last weekend on lake Stevens as well for the first time chasing kokanee. Even though we came up short, I have been spending every spare minute thinkin what I can do to catch those things. Hopefully with some tackle changes this weekend will be the ticket.

I've caught sockeye on Lake Washington with bare red hooks....I'm going run a rod with a dodger and a 10 inch leader with two red hooks. Why not?

You guys better get out there!  Talked to lots of guy at the boat launch today.  Limits.  Chrome/brass dodger, and green wedding ring tipped with corn was common gear with a couple split shots.
I might try and get on with rotten chum to get in on the action.

H2ohunter, pretty sure I saw you out there. Nice boat. I was having kicker motor issues so called it before even putting lines out. Be out again next weekend.

Well....we didn't quite slay 'em like I wanted. We landed enough for dinner and managed to lose about the same amount.

How many of you guys are running a treble on your lower hook? I run just to smaller hooks and was thinking I could increase my chances of landing them with a treble. We caught ours at the surface down to 15. We had our speed ranging from 1.3 up to 1.8 or so.

We managed to put 12 in the boat and lost quite a few (my 6 yr old was on the rod) . My 12 yr old and his buddy put 6 in his boat and lost a bunch.

Try slowing down more. We very rarely hit 1.4 mph...it's usually an accident if we do. All of our fish were caught @ 1.1 and 1.2mph yesterday and @ depths from 10' down to 30' with most coming from the 19 to 25' range. I marked schools down @ 60 to 70 and chased them with no biters.

We don't run trebles. I run my second hook further back than most people do. I think it does two things....it gets more of the short striking fish and if a fish does get the front hook the second hook usuall swings around until it finds a flesh which helps.land more fish.

Thank you. They are tasty. We landed one of my bigger kokes yesterday. I didn't put a tape to it but I'd say about 14 inches.

I'll be back out this weekend I hope. Going to take some of the advice, slow down a bit more, work the riggers and watch the sounder, and I think maybe shorten up my leaders just a tad more.

IMO, for trout/salmon type fish, trebles are not as effective as individual hook setups. Treble hooks have a pretty limited application in my mind. And that's coming from a guy who loves fishing Alaskan sockeye with a silver gnat.  :twocents:

I went back out on LS last saturday. Fished dawn to 10:30, and put 5 in the boat. Surprisingly, didn't lose any. We were running John's specified setup on one pole and a bunch of different wedding rings on the others. Had the clown flashers on 3 poles, ran a pink spatter for a while. Ran the poles long line till about 9, about 95-100 pulls, then set up the down riggers around 10'. We never had one hook up on the down riggers.

I'm switching over to the drop shot hooks to help keep fish on. I've never had a big problem, but any edge i can get i'll take. Also going to try the super dippin' sauce out, and of course my go to scents.

If any of you aren't on the NW Kokanee addicts page on FB that Jason started you're missing out. Once i pull the trigger on a new fish finder soon it's going to be on like Donkey Kong. I'm going to try to get out this friday with my new to me motor. I'm tired of fighting with my old 8hp long shaft Merc. Left me stranded last trip in the wind in the cove  :bash:
