No summer Chinook for area 10
« on: April 16, 2015, 06:06:37 AM »
"Anglers fishing Marine Area 10 (Seattle/Bremerton) will see the biggest change this season. The area will be closed to chinook retention as part of an effort to rebuild stocks returning to Lake Washington.  However, Marine Area 10 will still be open for coho and pink salmon retention."   :'(

Area 9 quota cut in half 2,483 fish.

Something fishing going on.  The rec fishery has a tiny impact and the tribes already get a huge percent.

Perhaps.  I also wonder of the rec share wasn't used up to allow non-treaty commercials access to pinks or something else?

The area 9 quota is gonna go fast will all the rec anglers from 10 making the short trip north.  Expect the Puyallup to be closed again, even though the this years silver run is supposed to be larger than last years, and last year was close to a record year.

Go to the Salmon U. site and read Tom Nelson's Area 9 report. :bash: :bash:

It's time for the white man to reconquer the Indians. They are Soverign nations well I'm ready to go to war. Seriously it's time to end this BS. Throughout history conquered people become enslaved but in our liberal society they have become privileged and entitled. It's simply ridiculous. Here an idea every time an Indian wants to come off the reservation charge them money to enter our country the USA.

Wow.  Who would have thought this thread would have turned into Indian bashing.  Would be nice to see more information posted on the thread that would create constructive dialogue rather than knee jerked biased reactions.

I guess lynch mobs are more fun for some.

From what I have heard through the grapevine, this was the result of a pissing contest between the Muckleshoot and the Makah. The Makah have first crack at whatever comes in the straits and were unwilling to keep the nets out of the water while ESA listed Chinook came through.  Lots of moving parts, but that was the main sticking point as understand it.  I'm not sure how all of the non-treaty commercials fared, but I do know a few groups - including the recreational fleet - were forced to agree to what amounts to a token season because the tribes wouldn't negotiate an agreement between themselves.

there is no reasoning with the tribes they are entitled by law and abuse this power they own the wdfw and governor. The funniest part about the tribes to me is they are
Self regulated. I mean really it's a joke imho they take 90 percent of the king harvest that comes through the sound. They are accountable to no one.

Tribal and state salmon co-managers come to agreement on upcoming fishing seaons
Apr 15th, 2015 • Category: Lead Story, News

sockeyeTreaty tribal and state salmon co-managers reached agreement late Tuesday on a package of fishing seasons that will fairly share the burden of conserving weak wild salmon stocks while providing limited harvest opportunities.

“Cooperation on both sides helped to ensure that everyone will be able to fish this year,” said Lorraine Loomis, chair of the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission.

“We are especially thankful for the leadership of former WDFW director Phil Anderson and current director Jim Unsworth in helping to meet our shared conservation challenges,” she said.

This year’s season-setting process was especially difficult because of necessary conservation measures required by ongoing habitat loss and climate change that is resulting in drought, low water levels and higher water temperatures that are lethal to salmon.

Necessary fishery reductions were especially painful for tribal and state managers this year, Loomis said, but were necessary because of uncertainty in environmental conditions. Salmon returns were poor throughout western Washington last year. Setting this year’s season was further complicated by ongoing concerns about ocean conditions and a low snowpack that is expected to lead to increased water temperatures.

“Because of these conditions we may see an increase in pre-spawning mortality of salmon this year, which required the tribal and state co-managers to be extra cautious in setting seasons,” Loomis said

To lighten the conversation, the silver run is supposed to be better than last year.  Hope we can keep some wilds still like last year up in area 5,6.

Whatever became of the 50/50 deal? :dunno: 2006-2012 the tribes got 68% of the Chinook and the commercial and sports guys got 32%. The tribes got 70% of the Coho and the commercial and sports got 30%. Something's wrong with the equation here, I didn't even take bonehead math and I can even figure it out. :bash:
