Reloading awareness
« on: April 22, 2015, 05:22:19 PM »
Just a friendly reminder from this last year about reloading safety, my father was doing some load develop for my rifle and accidentally switched up h4831sc for varget. I use mostly hodgons powder where he uses imr (somewhat color coded), and loaded 60.5 grains of varget behind a 168 vld, luckily just fused the bolt face and case. No harm to him and had safety glasses on as always, stay safe and don't be complacent.  He has been reloading for over 40 years and the first mishap.

Great reminder, impactful picture and I'm glad that all is well....... :).

I've been handloadin' for 40 years as well and age and experience is no substitute for staying alert and being aware.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Reminds me of a .223 fired case I found that looked like it was "magnumized".

For what it's worth, I always put the powder I'm using right behind my powder dump.
Glad he's ok.
On a lighter not did you get a chrono. On that.

Actually the primer doesn't show pressure signs.
Could you show a pic. Of the bolt face? Just curios. Thanks

We have a powder shelf that we keep it on and only have the one we are using on the bench, he didn't really know what he did til he pounded the bolt up and out, even then he thought he had somehow managed to feed a belted catridge in even though we own no belted calibers.  No chrono on it but hit where it was suppose to, no idea on velo but faster than 3k I assume lol back together shooting well, 4 shot group..

Did it separate at the pressure ring? Is that the case head next to it in the photo? Wow! Glad everyone's good.

How many times you think you reloaded that brass ...?  I was watching the Alaskan Shows a few nights ago . They were saying how they have a limited amount of brass So they reload the same case 10x or more  :yike:  I usually reload them 3 or 4 times and then I can them ..Sometimes when they have been loaded to many times they will pull apart at base part of the case when you open the bolt to eject it ..Leaving the case stuck in the chamber ..some serious pressure built up for sure !

That's what I thought had happend. It came apart at the pressure ring and left a nice looking case head.
