Definitely gonna be gettin an alarm. First time of hearing of an alarm. Im glad i didn't have my spring bear in there! Hopefully i will be able to fill my bull tag to replace the meat but it just weighs heavy having killed an elk and wasting a portion of it :bash:

That would be tough.

Few years back took a vacation during the month of July after purchasing a side of beef.  Left for a week only to come home to a garage full of smelly, bloody mess. Seems one of the kids didn't shut the freezer door after getting some meals out for our trip  :bash: :bash: Ever since moved freezer into house so that it can be checked before leaving on a extended trip.

Sorry for your loss.  :( If I lived closer I'd hook you up as I need to clear out the freezer before the bloodbath that will ensue this fall.

We keep our upright in the house. Its not a frost free so I'm guessing before the meat completely rots I'd see a puddle. We have occasion to open that freezer most every day so there's a few reasons why we'd discover the mess... I'd hope.

OTOH if we leave the AC off when we go for a trip the temperature is in the low to mid 90s in the house when we get back. Imagine what this house would smell like  :yike:

Do the freezer alarms send you a text in case it happens while away, but close enough to get back in time?

Turn it into Dungeness crab

Please explain

Crab bait...

Exactly, it's not a total waste if you use it to fill your new freezer with delicious crab!

I am in and out of my freezer a few times per week so if something happened to mine, I would notice before I lost everything... I think... Sucks to lose that much quality meat. Just means you will have to replace it this fall.

You can also run a light off the same plugin that your freezer is plugged into.  That way its easily noticed if that light is out, your freezer is not working either.

Ask me how I know, I also lost all my deer and elk meat last monday!!
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

Freezer alarms $12 on amazon

I run a power alarm too - common for garage  gfci breaker to trip. Usually same circuit as outlets outside in the weather

Run a dedicated circuit just for the freezer outlet and do not install a GFCI. Install a standard outlet and make sure you have some kind of alarm as noted. I do like the light idea! Think I will pull a wire to the outside of my shop and mount a light socket and install a red light bulb or similar.

A freezer alarm is a lot easier and more efficient than running a light 24/7.

You can also install a GFCI that has a lighted indicator when it's tripped, this way the light is on only when tripped not all the time until it trips.

N/O N/C 2 pole relay to a warning light would work as well,  take a little know how to install thou.

This happened to me once , kinda . I went on a fishing trip for 5 days came home went to put fish in freezer and omg freezer door was ajar and it was late august . Luckily the freezer is one of the old heavy duty types and i also freeze ice jugs as space allows , which not only keeps your freezer from running as much but you always have ice for coolers . Anyways these things saved my bacon . the meat toward the front was mostly thawed but ice cold . So I canned it vs. refreeze . Man was that freezer iced over ! All of my freezers now have bungies around the door . I hadnt heard about the alarms, definately gonna check them out .
But I feel your pain and that sinking feeling in your gut when you first find things are haywire .

Sorry to hear about that, FYI if your not sure what happened to freezer, my freezer quit working one day, I called my father-in-law, who was an HVAC guy, he said pull the cover off back and see if the fan is turning, I did and saw that some mice or rat had made a nest around the warm fan motor, and made the fan not spin, as soon as I cleared stuff out of the way the fan started spinning, and the freezer started to cool down and worked! Maybe this can help you or someone else someday, Good luck this year to fill it back up!
I will keep my guns, money and freedom. You can keep the change!
