Scope for 7mm mag
« on: February 02, 2016, 09:44:49 AM »
I have narrowed it to 2 scopes. I don't know much about scopes but I wanted something 14-16 power up to 400. Here are the two I was looking at but am open to other options.

I put a Leupold VX3  3.5-10x40 CDS on my Tikka T3 7 mag. My son put the same scope but 4-14x40 on his. I like them both a lot. Either 1 will be enough scope for most people. I'm most likely going to keep mine as a 1/4 moa instead of CDS. But not positive. Have a little more work to do to get to where I want to be with it. Ive had a lot guys with experience tell me the 3.5-10 will be plenty for anything out to a 1000 yards. I most likely wont be shooting that far. But you never know.

I am still in the load developement stage for a Savage 116 7mm I put together just before last season and I topped it with a Leupold 6-18x40 cds. Those both look to be pretty good I don't know how you could go wrong with either  good luck!

If you're looking at Vortex and you're saying you have a $400 budget I'd look at a leupold vx2 or a vortex diamondback hp. Bmcox86 on here has a nice Viper for sale cheap too. Much better glass than what you're looking at now.

Have you really used 14-16 on game? For the range I like more power but hunting haven't needed it and even when I've had more have turned it down. Now hunt with a fixed 6x. Is plenty to pop the steel coyote at my range at 440

I've got a 4-16 on a rifle and have no problem with it. It's usually at 4x but the rest is there if I need it.

OK so after reading some more threads and a little research I am leaning towards leupold vx 3 since I have heard some mixed reviews about vortex. Maby I can find a cheap one since they just came out with the vx3i. I am still pretty lost when it comes to scopes. I am going to try and get out this weekend and look through a couple and see if I can find something I like.

:yeah:  I just put a crossfire 2 just like the one you posted on my last AR build. While its not a bad scope (especially for the price) I wouldn't put one on a big game rifle. My biggest complaint with it, beyond 12 power its pretty hard to see through and the eye relief is a very narrow window. Under 12x the view is pretty darn clear. Plus the AO is a pain to mess with in the field.

I've have several different styles and sizes of Leupold scopes from riflemans to Mark4s and never have an issue with darkness or shadowing through the whole power range. They are clear at any setting even with the sun in your face.

DO NOT buy a Leopold or any other scope with a 36 mm. 40 mm or bigger. I'd go straight to the Vortex Diamondback. Also, a scope with an A/O is a PITA, unless you have a lot of time to adjust it to get it clear to see out of it.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I had a vortex diamondback on a .300 win mag and I broke/floated the reticle from the recoil I think. I sent it back to vortex and they fixed it. I'm pretty sure the recoil from that rifle broke the scope. Not sure though.
