Guiding on public land???

Was discussing an outfitter with a friend and the rules for guiding on public land came up. I wad always under the impression that it can not be done.

My friend said that it's legal with the proper documentation. Tried looking it up but not much info that I could find.

Perfectly legal. I don't know what permits are required.

There are plenty of outfitters/guides on this site that can give you the exact info...

Washington doesn't require a guide license for starters. Forest Service land mainly on the east side does have outfitter concession rules for different areas and whatever outfitters have those concessions/permits are then the only legal commercial operations allowed in those areas and any guides have to be working for them. Some areas don't allow any commercial operations either and there is no guiding on WDFW land which a lot of people don't know. However the most common misconception is that guiding and outfitting is a prosperous way to make a lot of money. Bahahahaha.

"Perfectly legal"? On wdfw lands, more like "explicitly illegal." Page 29 of the waterfowl regs states "Hunting guides on WDFW lands are not permitted except for waterfowl guides on specific WDFW lands in Region 2." Doesn't get much easier to find than IN THE WATERFOWL REGS!

WDFW doesn't own that much land. Public and WDFW are not the same.

I know on state DNR land a permit and insurance is required.

Yes I'm aware that there is public land that isn't owned by WDFW. Lots of it! What I took issue with is the blanket statement that it is "perfectly legal" to guide on public land. As this is a waterfowl forum, and many waterfowl hunters (especially if they live in Seattle, as the OP does) who hunt public land do so on WDFW lands, I thought it would be informative to share that passage from the regs.

Appreciate the info. Have never encountered guides on dnr but have seen them at wdfw and that's what we were more specifically discussing.

As a rule guiding on public land is perfectly legal. If we got into the exact requirements for every parcel we could have pages and pages of specifics.

The original post was about public land and any guiding as a blanket queetion I answered it with a blanket statement and also said I didn't know exact permit requirements... Meaning stipulations

To guide on public land you would need a permit from the appropriate agency. Which you may or may not be able to get.

I have run into a few "Craigslist Guides" ( hint, hint red truck) that "guide" on WDFW land they do so under the radar in the Everett snohomish area we used to see them all the time & they were quite aggressive about the blinds they built and their right to use them no matter what. (on WDFW land).   Nothing that a gallon of Diesel won't fix.

Unless your in a boat, then the USCG requires at least an OUPV capt license.

The 6-pack boating license is only required if you are on navigable waters!
