Savage Model 12 FV?

Does anyone have any experience with the Savage Model 12 FV?  I'm looking to pick up an entry level varmint rifle for my Grandson.  Thinking about the Savage Model 12 chambered in .223.  I've heard good things about the Savage 12 but I've also heard that there might be a problem with the firing pin? Your thoughts?  Thanks!

I have built a number of hunting and target rifles on the Savage short action and yet to have a problem with a firing pin.  Some of the firing pin holes in the bolt face can be slightly oversize and cause primer cratering but work just fine, it is an easy fix if it bothers you.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Two of my buddies have Savage 12 VLP's in .223.  Both rifles are 1/4 MOA right out of the box with minimal load development. 
The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt.

It will be excellent for that.  Good job starting him into the Savage phase early, so he can outgrow it before he has accumulated 7 of them and then has to sell them and replace them with 700s and customs!   8)

The model 12 in any form is a great gun. If you look around you can find them pretty cheap on sale. I paid $380 for one a while back at Cabelas.

I got one when Cabelas had a sale. With savage rebate, sale and extra discount it ended up $250 after tax. Can't hardly beat that for a brand new, bull barrel rifle. That savage accutrigger feels awesome too. Now deciding on optics to throw on it. I'm confident it will be a great shooter.
