Missed him clean... still lovin' this 17 Hornet though
« on: June 12, 2016, 08:42:03 PM »
Missed my first shot Saturday morning clean.  WTH!  Double WTH, I don't miss 120 yard rockchucks.

Ah ha!  Damnable grass sticking up about 15 yards out that I had overlooked when picking out a setup.

But then I ran 23 straight at ranges from 85 - 220 yards.  Missed another when I ticked another blade of grass and then went another 11 straight before picking up and heading back to The RV park by the time my wife and kids roll outa' the sack.

I had an hour drive on both ends of my morning shoot, but managed to get behind the 17 Hornet Contender by 06:30 and shot until ~ 09:00 before packing it in and heading back to get the bacon, eggs and spuds on the griddle.  That was some pretty good action right there though.  34 chucks in under three hours and all of them big fat ones.

That 17 Hornet is one mean son of a gun, I went looking for a chuck that wasn't hamburgerized to take a photo of and it took a bit of climbing through the rocks to locate this fat rascal.  The chucks were on a rock wall on the other side of a hay meadow, not on the canal service road when I shot them.  I left my camera in the truck, so I hauled this one back to the canal service road for a photo.

Saturday afternoon my daughter got into a conversation at the RV park and the subject of her dad killing over 30 rockchucks before breakfast came up.  Seems the local golf links have been invaded by a notorious gang of renegade chucks headed up by the infamous Fat Jack.

Lotsa' men had tried to get a piece of ol' Fat Jack and no one was even able to get a shot off before the whole gang holed.  I hadn't been planning to shoot Sunday morning, but I couldn't resist trying my hand at Fat Jack.   I went out with my daughter Saturday evening to get the lay of the land and reconnoitered the situation and then got set up early Sunday morning before the golfers started to arrive.  The shootin' was a bit slower than Saturday, but the tally on Sunday was two skilled, including Fat Jack for three total shots.  I was only out for an hour before going back to the RV park to get my daughter and take her fishing.  That's not bad though, a shot every 20 minutes.

The pics are from Saturday.  Fat Jack was 25% again larger than this guy, I would have photographed Fat Jack but he took a 20 gr Vmax in the face and I don't do those type of photos.  This is a pretty nice sized chuck in the photo though and that second photo is my ammo box after I wrapped up Saturday morning.  For those of you who are not chuck shooters the empties pointing up are for the chucks that went up to the hay meadow in the sky.  That is how you keep tally without too much effort.

Until we pulled out this afternoon I was a minor celebrity, I was "the guy who killed Fat Jack."  From what I hear I may be the guy who killed Fat Jack for some time to come.

I am really liking this setup.  I had planned to shoot my CZ 527 - 22 Hornet this weekend but left the magazines and single shot adapter at home.  I am about out of ammo for this rifle, I don't have any more Accurate 1680 or 20 gr V-max bullets right now either.

What's wrong with your license plate?  Looks like you have been vandalized.
