Walmart Ruger American

Ok so I scored one of the $199 RAR in
.243 from Walmart. I know it's not the highest quality rifle but for the money I took a chance. So the problem is the stock is touching the barrel almost the whole length. I tried removing it with no luck. So anyone else have this problem? Should I waste my money on a Boyd's or just go to town with the sand paper.

I'd just sand on it a little and save the money for  a decent scope

Synthetics on inexpensive stocks are pretty soft and different pressures, offhand , shooting sticks, slings(some of us still use a sling as a shooting aid) or different placements on the sandbag can cause variations in shot placement.  That said I've had pretty good luck with factory Savage and Rem stocks by sanding the channel enough so the forend can't touch the barrel whether I'm using a sling or sandbags and if you intend to use with a bipod.  Give the forend plenty of room to move.

I had a Remington 710 (pos) in 30-06. A guy at the range suggested that I make sure the barrel was floating in the fore stock. I talked to a couple smiths about this and they said with the lighter barreled rifles the stock is engineered to help strengthen the barrel and modifications to make it float are more harmful than helpful.

Have you shot it yet?  You may be trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

The stock is the only thing I don't like about the Ruger American. I'd get a Boyd's stock, I love their laminated stocks, and the price is very reasonable, I think $140? I wouldn't mess around with the cheap plastic stock.

I just bought a Ruger American predator in 308 it's completely free floated from the factory.Are the regular american rifles not free floated?

I just looked at the website and says this for the standard American also: "Patent-pending Power Bedding®, integral bedding block system positively locates the receiver and free-floats the barrel for outstanding accuracy."

Have you shot it yet?  You may be trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist.

I have not shot it and it might shoot fine but it will still drive me crazy every time I look at it.

You don't want to engineer a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

I don't but if they advertise free floating then I want free floating
