I never gave any thought to having a shorter barrel and I used it chasing dogs throughout western Washington. It was pretty handy. I doubt that I would ever put a scope on a Marlin 1895. I used to use something like 50 grains of IMR 4198 and a Hornady 350 RN in it when I first got it. I ruined more than a few bruins w/it. The big thing is the bullet is not staying in a bear and it is too easy to kill a dog w/that bullet. It would be a great bullet for elk or moose though. This is close to the load I'm running. 49.5g h4198 under a 350g to or entity hornady. Everything I've read said this bullet is wicked on bears, were you not getting expansion or something?
