I was planing on hunting with my 1895 Winchester reproduction this year but I won't get to. I wanted to put a receiver sight on it and develop some loads but I got busy and didnt get around to either one of those little projects. So... I'll have to save the 1895 for another year.
What caliber is your 95? I've been looking for a 30/40 Krag saddle ring carbine reproduction to go with my original handed down. How do you like yours? Have you compared it to an original on feel/finish?
Mine is a .30-06 SRC, haven't got much trigger time with it but I like it quite a lot. I'm going to load up some 220 grain bullets for it just because I can. Last fall shooting off of the tailgate of my truck I put 5 180 grain round nose (of what I thought was garbage factory ammo) into a nice little group of 1.25-1.5" at around 80 yards so it's got potential to be an accurate rifle. It's so well fitted and polished it dang near operates itself once you start running the lever. I also have the reproduction Lyman receiver sight for it (available through Buffalo Arms) but haven't gotten that mounted up yet. Don't have an original to compare it too but except for the two safeties it's a pretty faithful reproduction.
I'm also looking for one in .30-40. It figures I can't find one because when I bought mine there were a few for sale but I haven't seen one for sale since then in that caliber.
Ya man my 30/40 is crazy accurate as well I have a Williams peep site on it. Does your gun have that safety where you have to make sure the lever is up against the gun? My brothers has it and it's annoying as hell. I was hoping the reproduction 1895's didn't have them. Basically like a 3rd safety. So you have the hammer, the button, then have to make sure the lever is up against the gun. To much going on. I would like the button safety though on the 1895 I have because I don't like having to lower the hammer with the gun loaded every time in the rain and stuff. Anyhow if you find a couple or one you don't buy let me know. Saddle ring carbine is what I really want. Do you have any pictures?
No the 1895 Winchester doesnt have the button under the lever, it's got a hook
It's a two piece lever that engages the hook, kind of a funky design when you look at a schematic but it's never given me trouble. The reproductions also have the rebounding hammer and the tang safety but no half cock notch like the originals.
You can sometimes find a Browning reproduction from the 80's, these dont have the rebound hammer or the tang safety and are identical to an original except for their markings. Unfortunately Browning never made a SRC version only the longer rifle version.
Here's how it'll look when I get the receiver sight on it, gives it another 10" of sight radius. Note that the saddle ring must be removed for this sight to fit.

And the tang safety. The hammer isn't at half cock like an original, thats where it sits when it it lowered without actually firing. I have a few parts and may delete this in the future but I haven't decided.
