I like lever actions - but tube magazines are a pain - I hate having to jack out all the rounds to unload

Marlin 336 30-30 mfg 1957.  I put Skinner sights on it.  Wonderful to shoot!

tube mags are also very limiting in bullet selection--flat nose, round nose or hornady leverevolution squishy tips.
Something like a blr, win 88 or savage 99 you get the spectrum of bullets.

Marlin 1895 GSS with XS peep sights and Wild West Trigger.  So light and quick on target.

A timely article on the 1895 and differences between the 18.5 inch barrel of the guide versus the 22" barrel.

http://www.realguns.com/articles/862.htm

Spoiler: go with the 18.5".

Mine was from long before the current trend toward really short barrels on the 1895 and it was a pretty compact unit.  I never gave any thought to having a shorter barrel and I used it chasing dogs throughout western Washington.  It was pretty handy.  I doubt that I would ever put a scope on a Marlin 1895.  I used to use something like 50 grains of IMR 4198 and a Hornady 350 RN in it when I first got it.  I ruined more than a few bruins w/it.  The big thing is the bullet is not staying in a bear and it is too easy to kill a dog w/that bullet.  It would be a great bullet for elk or moose though.

I shot my first deer with a model 94 30-30. Then several deer right after that with a model 99 300 savage. I still have the savage. I've always wanted a BLR. Love the lever guns!

Winchester 88 in 308
I also have a Marlin 336Y 30-30 that is a great little carbine to carry in the thick stuff.

Like Pianoman, I used to hunt with a Model 94 30-30 for years when I was in Maine; it was a great "walking" rifle. But then I was robbed (sniff-sniff whimper) and the %^&* took my 30-30. Now I have a Marlin 336C 30-30, with a big loop and few other goodies. Nice lever action!  I also have a Marlin 1895 GBL guide Gun in 45/70. I haven't shot anything in Washington with it yet. GORGEOUS lever action carbine! It's just as accurate as the 30-30, but I'll admit it, the 30-30 gets taken out a lot more often. I mostly used the 45/70 for hog hunting in Texas, and there are no hogs here. I guess I need to have a run-in with a bear before the 45/70 goes with me.

This is close to the load I'm running. 49.5g h4198 under a 350g to or entity hornady.
Everything I've read said this bullet is wicked on bears, were you not getting expansion or something?
