30/40 krag
« on: December 24, 2016, 08:50:30 PM »
My dad gave me the nicest sporterized 30/40 krag I've ever seen for Christmas. Anyone else have one? Any hunting stories?

My stepson inherited one from his Dad. He's crazy about his; talks about it all the time. He considers it a classic. Not sure how many - if any - mods/upgrades his 30/40 Krag has. I guess it's pretty old. I'll have to ask him just how old, or get a S/N to look it up.

I had someone look mine up a while ago. It was built in 1929. Great grandfather has pictures of him with a double cougar kill. Grandad killed a bear and deer with it. Dad passed it down to me. Anyhow I love it and shoots amazing

Looks just like the one I got from my dad except mine does not have the peep sight.  Barrel on mine was cut down as it had a rough spot in it and back in the late 50's most military rifles ended up sporterized.

The 30/40 is a killing machine.  Somewhere in history (before I was born) my mother's M 95 was lost.  Rumor has it that my mother was a "hell of a shot."

I have never used one, but being from Montana I know a lot of oldsters who tried other "more modern" rounds who went back to the "30/40 Krag" and swore by it.

The other old rounds that I remember were used by many of the older generation, back in the 1960's when I was a kid and loved to read about the "latest and greatest" developments and ask questions, were the 33 Winchester and the 348 Winchester.
