Fire starters
« on: April 06, 2017, 08:33:46 PM »
What's the best firestarters for the backcountry?  Like rainforest backcountry...  I've done cotton balls with vasoline and they work OK, but have let me down in the past.  Also like the idea of something sealed so it can't get messed up.  Looking into the mil-surp trioxane as one option.  Any others I should consider?

I put some Rutland fire squares, and some fatwood in Ziploc bags and put in my pack.

I make my own fire starter from sawdust and paraffin.  It's waterproof, burns good and long, and costs nothing.

Good stuff!  Some of the surplus trioxane is pretty old... like from the 80's.  still good stuff being sealed?

Or paper parifin combo as well, I always clean the lint trap out at the house as well for when it isn't as wet.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

I've had good results with dryer lint also.

 :yeah:

Fire squares are light weight and burn for about 8 minutes per square.
