It has probably been 5 or 6 years since I remember talking about this, but a member and I had a short discussion on newspaper versus regular paper. He believed the ink contributed to less hook-ups. He had fished side by side with someone like me who always used newspaper, when he had used plain. It was something ridiculous like a 5:1 or 7:1 hook-up ratio. That tip always stuck with me.
I've got zero evidence but would also worry about ink smell in my eggs. I do know that very small scent differences can make a difference, and especially for salmon, so I avoid anything that could add unwanted scent. This includes during curing and while fishing.
