I'd look for a Chevy 1500 with the 5.3 engine, and 4x4. Seems like I see good deals on them, and they are solid trucks (this coming from a Ford nut)I'd be careful with a diesel, they can get expensive, really fast.

Any recommendations on what truck to go after? Not really looking into anything new or expensive. Maybe 10k tops for now.

Ford engine 5.4 is weak and gets crappy mpg. I'm not a chev guy but the small v-8 are the best in that era. The little chev gets decent mpg, 17-20 if I remember right. 5.3 is good one too. Hemi gets 13-17 but is much stronger. Smossy for 10k you can find a good rig.
