The Tacoma in the classifieds seems like a really good deal. I had 326k on my last Tacoma with no major failures. If tubddras with the 5.7 weren't so expensive I would be driving one of those right now.

As much as i want that tacoma. I'd have to sell a few things before I could afford it. Just was wondering why type of rig would be worth while..

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you see towing in the future, get a 3/4 ton. If there might be a slide in camper in the future, go with a one ton. But keep in mind a rig made for towing or hauling isn't about gas mileage.

Mudman hit it. Tacoma or a Cummins.

Not sure there's that kind of profit available from selling a two wheel drive short bed v-6 F-150...

I'd look for a Chevy 1500 with the 5.3 engine, and 4x4. Seems like I see good deals on them, and they are solid trucks (this coming from a Ford nut)

I'd be careful with a diesel, they can get expensive, really fast.
hes right, I'm a ford guy but I drive an 06 Chevy with the 5.3 everyday for work. I've put 59k on it myself and only replaced wheel bearings and did the brakes. It is a really solid engine. The interior of the truck is cheap but I just use it for work so I don't really care.

Any recommendations on what truck to go after? Not really looking into anything new or expensive. Maybe 10k tops for now.

I'd second that. These are good affordable trucks.  A little older are pretty good also but they are getting hard to find in decent shape.  The 5.3l motor is a great motor, not great for towing heavy loads but for general half-ton stuff its pretty hard to beat.

Buy this rig Smossy.
Solid advice here.

That might get him a better 2001 vehicle, but it won't get him more power as Smossy was looking for.

Smossy moving up to a V8 is the only way to get efficient power out of a pickup of the 2000 or 2001 year range.

I would look for a decent 1500 Ram or Chev, (OK I will include Ford F150 as well) in the price range you want.
If you are solid in your 10 grand price range, two wheel drives would be substantially more affordable than 4x4.

Ford engine 5.4 is weak and gets crappy mpg.  I'm not a chev guy but the small v-8 are the best in that era.  The little chev gets decent mpg, 17-20 if I remember right.  5.3 is good one too.  Hemi gets 13-17 but is much stronger.  Smossy for 10k you can find a good rig.

To add to Mudman's
If looking at a Ram, stay clear of the 4.7 if you can and go with the 5.9. I had two 4.7s, one in a 2002 Ram and another in a 2001 Durango. The 4.7 my be just fine up to around 200k, then it starts to where out quick.

My 2002 chev Silverado with the 5.3 was 290hp and got around 13mpg daily driving. That's with 95% of all the proper maintenance done and maintained sort of obsessively.

for around $10K? Tough to get either in good condition without high range miles at that price range. The half ton Chevy or Ford pick ups probably offer better chances. Especially, if you look at the two wheel drive market.
