I had a 02 single cab 4.2L F150 loved that truck.  Never broke down, even accidentaly jumped a few road burms.  If you are wanting better performance offroad and dirt roads you could regear to like 4:10 or 4:56 that would make it feel more powerful at lower gears.  Thats as far as I would go with mods for that truck tho.

Mudman hit it. Tacoma or a Cummins.

Not sure there's that kind of profit available from selling a two wheel drive short bed v-6 F-150...

Any recommendations on what truck to go after? Not really looking into anything new or expensive. Maybe 10k tops for now.

Read this post Happy.

for around $10K? Tough to get either in good condition without high range miles at that price range. The half ton Chevy or Ford pick ups probably offer better chances. Especially, if you look at the two wheel drive market.

Doesn't look too tough.

go ecobeast!
There fixed it for you..

Smossy - joking aside, you gotta go try an F150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost.  The 3.5Eco motor will surprise you.  More power than the 5.4V8 for has with better mileage.  These new motors are just great right out of the box and only get better with a tune.  I bought a 2013 SHO with one a few months back, quick and powerful stock, dropped <$1k for mods and gained at least 1/2 again more power.  Programmer, colder plugs, and a tune was all it takes.  Might be tough on budget, but worth a look imho.

If his price range is below $10k, he won't be buying any Ecoboosts anytime soon.

Just to clarify let me explain the situation. Becks hyundai genesis will be payed off soon, (approx 500 a month payment) we were talking about selling my truck and my cadillac :( but since I don't drive it I don't want it to completely go to waste because i hold sentimental value to it. So it will free up some space and open some spending room. I basically said 10k as a rough goal that would be nice to stick to but realistically we still have our ford exploder for camping and random offroad trips. A truck would be more geared toward throwing random crap in the back (hunting/fishing/trapping/camping) and it would be nice to be ABLE to haul some stuff if need be. So maybe that 10k will be a little looser. Just trying to get a feel for what everyone thinks some ok used vehicles would be, not looking to drop 40-60k on a new truck. We eventually would like to buy our own house lol. But between me and her another vehicle payment for a workhorse shouldn't be a problem.

Buy an older cummins then.  You will need a truck to run for 20 years while your paying off your house!

There are also a couple diesels in that price range (around 200,000 k mile range) Others who know diesels better can chime in on what a good diesel is.

Well aware that they tend to be more, it is why I made the very last statement "tough on budget but worth a look".  And the prices are coming down on them, $10k rigs are out there.

Setting a budget is awesome.  But some times we all need our eyes opened to the options available if we stretch the budget a little.  Just trying to give him options based on very positive personal experience with the powerplant and lot of positive feedback from other owners.
