I was up at Hancock
« on: July 15, 2017, 10:24:11 PM »
Today and seen a couple of herds of elk. One herd had 8 cows in it with one calf. The second herd had 7 cows and had two calves and a spike. I'm thinking I should have seen more calves with these couple herds. Do you guys think that the bears and cougars taking the majority of these calves?

Thanks

My buddy found a freshly killed calf up on the bridge gate side the same day he reported seeing two wolves. Said the butt was chewed out that's it. Had pictures I saw them.  @n_foggy

IMO it's not common to see "herds" of deer or elk in the summer without fawn/calves.  The momma's out there are still solitary.  It takes time before they bring them into general population.  Seems the does bunched up are the "non takers".  :twocents:

I was up there yesterday checking my cameras and there is still plenty of calves with the cows.  What I've observed is that once the herd sees you coming the calves/fawns bed down out of site, which is real easy to do when the foxgloves, ferns and thistles are 6' tall as they are right now in the clear cuts.
