This is the year!
«

This is my year! I am 0-5 on elk so far but year 6 is going to be different!!
I have been all around them every year but cant seem to cross paths with one. I see all of the sign everywhere. I have seen the carcasses from other kills. I have packed out several buddies elk so I know I am in the right spot. For 5 years I have pushed through that crazy thick, wet, western Washington brush, at least 7 miles per day without ever firing a shot.
Anyone that works in construction in the Seattle area, you know times are crazy right now. I am not able to take off as much time for elk this year so I will be pushing twice as hard as normal when I do make it out to the woods.
Year after year of putting in many tough & wet miles and trying to keep going when every muscle is my body is screaming to quit has led me to this year, the year I am hoping everything changes for me.
Good luck to all tomorrow!!

Move slower and glass more. I had no clue what I was doing the first couple years but I know I was moving too fast and was way loud. I will be still hunting.
Also after hunting the same area for 5 years, I know the game trails and terrain like the back of my hand. In the past I found most of the time I was just trying to figure out where to go and not actually hunting elk. I saw in another thread that you should be "hunting" when you are in the woods and not "hiking". I was definitely hiking before and will be 100% hunting this year.
I will be enjoying the woods much more this year as oppose to being upset I didnt fill my tag yet like last year. Work has been so nuts and exhausting that I am going to savor every moment in the woods.

Sounds like a good plan. Be at their feeding location at daylight and dark and hunt bedding areas during the day.

Holy crap, this IS the year! Notched my first elk tag every yesterday. I shot him at 645am yesterday and am still in disbelief.
It looks like the rest of my elk hunting career will be trying to harvest a bull as big as my first one

That's awesome, congrats! Learning where and how to hunt can definitely be a process. Looks like went through that process just fine! Well done, lets see a pic

Nice work! that's an absolute stud! Its amazing what a positive attitude and a good plan can produce. Well done! Also with the cheaters on both sides I cant believe how symmetrical that bull is, very cool rack.
