quality deer question
« on: December 04, 2017, 04:18:48 PM »
I have 14 quality points and have a bit of a dilemma. I would love to put them towards a modern firearm mule deer rut hunt but my new job entails a november 20 deadline for renewals so my month or so before that is pretty much booked up. My question is, what other modern firearm hunts would you recommend instead? I have also considered a muzzy hunt for thanksgiving time but my first choice would be rifle for this specific hunt if possible.

Thought about early desert but I duck hunt out that way and that October timeframe is tough!

Maybe the herds will improve by the time you’re able to hunt in November.

I think I’ll be ghosting till the herds rebound myself, why have a tag that’s worth nothing. :twocents:

That was my initial thought but unless the Feds change something, which is highly unlikely, I will have this first deadline every year. I am a bow hunter too so that's an option but just would prefer to put my almost 15 year wait to an end with a rifle in my hand.

FWIW, with that many points/years waiting, you would be crazy to forgo a rifle permit opportunity.....assuming you are looking for a “trophy” and not just a notched tag. :twocents:

I wouldn't waste my application on a point option but instead I think I'd apply for one of the most difficult permits to draw, maybe the late Desert. Chances are you won't draw anyway but if you do I'm sure you'd find a way to hunt at least the two weekends, and that should be more than enough time, especially since it sounds like you're already fairly familiar with the area.

14 pts is long odds anyway - like 1 in 30 or worse

I fully understand, painfully, that even 14 points isn't great odds for some of the better tags but I still want to apply accordingly.  Last thing I want is to happen to draw a tag and not be able to give it my full attention
