I have actually been doing this with my golden retriever with sheds and hiding them throughout house.  He does pretty dang good finding them so we will see if it transfers outdoors.

I had a college friend that tied a sock to his fridge door and kept the cans of beer on the bottom shelf so his chocolate lab could fetch them for him.  She would also fetch the paper each morning from the front building of the condos he lived in.
