Duck Stamp
« on: July 05, 2018, 10:03:53 AM »
Question for those of you more experienced in hunting other states than me. I’m going to be duck hunting in North Dakota again this year, as well as here at home. Do I need to buy a federal duck stamp for each state I hunt ducks in?

Thanks for any help.

From my understanding you only need one Federal stamp.  It might not be a bad idea to call a North Dakota Fish and Wildlife office to verify though.  Good luck and let us know how your trip goes!

The only issue you may have is that Washington can be a stickler about having your federal stamp affixed to your Washington license and clearly signed across it. I do not know what ND rules are on the that.
I routinely hunt early season in Alaska and had my stamp affixed to my AK license, and just carried that with me when in WA- but one time a Wa gamie read me the riot act for that. He didn't write me up- but he was really wanting too.

Or you could just buy two- the money goes to a good cause.

Thanks, everyone. I do agree with the money being for a good cause, maybe I’ll just buy two. It’s not a lot of money. I hunted back there for pheasants & sucks last October & the hunting was fantastic. Can’t wait to get back this year. Going to add ina few days in South Dakota pheasant fields, also.

I hunted four states last year and bought one federal stamp.  It is good for all 50.  Make sure to have the license with you that the stamp is affixed to, even if it is not the license for the state you are currently hunting.  My fed stamp always goes on the back of the first state I hunt in a season (earliest opener) and then I make sure I have that stamp with me when hunting subsequent states.  I see no reason to buy two federal duck stamps.  They are $25 now!  I remember when they cost much less.

I'm trying to catch up with haydenhunter in the number of states I hunt. I think I'll hunt ducks in 3 states this year, pheasants maybe four. I have a big trip planned for October, just need to make the money to buy all that gas & fix some things on my camper.

I don't know why everyone is saying you have to put your stamp on your license. I have never done this and been checked at least 20 times. My first year hunting I talked to a game warden around the Spokane area about this and he said they will accept it as long as it is signed. They have a tough time enforcing the stamp being on the license since so many people hunt different states. I just sign mine and keep it with my license.

It depends on the warden. It's written in the rules to be stuck on this license, so they can hassle us if they want to. With all the complaining we hear about how there's so few of them, I'd hope they have better things to do.

Here is what is in the regs:

Quote
All duck and goose hunters 16 and over must possess a federal migratory bird stamp signed in ink across the front.

I did a word search and didn't see any other reference.  If it were me, I would pull out my regs and ask to see where it is required to be on your WA license.

Federal and WA doesn't require the stamp to be affixed to your license.

Additionally, WDFW Officers can't write citations for duck stamps because the state hasn't actually adopted the requirement to have a duck stamp into state code/laws. So in WA it's simply a violation of federal law to hunt without a duck stamp. Most other states have adopted the requirement and their wardens can write the ticket. In WA if a WDFW Officer contacts someone hunting without the stamp they have to write a report, forward it to USFWS and have a USFWS Officer/Agent send the person a federal citation. Why WA hasn't adopted the requirement is beyond me.
