DIY Break-Away Flashers - A tutorial
« on: August 15, 2018, 02:58:43 PM »
I made this video a couple weeks ago as someone was asking about break-away flashers on Facebook.  I like them as they seem to reduce the drag that tends to rotate barbless hooks out of a salmon's mouth.

There are a few commercial options for these like Q-cove (I think discontinued?) and another one that includes the flasher. Unfortunately, they seem to have limited color options. There is at least one magnetic version which works decently but the first iteration that I purchased for $10ea tended to corrode making the magnet ineffective.  The company says they have addressed this issue.

Here is a cheap and simple way to retrofit your existing flashers. You can use 40# mono and just tie to your snaps if you are interested in testing it before spending more $$ on leader and crimps.

I hope this helps land you some more fish!

I have about a 1000 feet of it that I acquired somewhere, but Ace should sell it by the foot.  If not, I think it is 22 or 24 gauge wire.

Be sure it is solid wire not stranded.

You should sticky this tutorial before it gets lost in the old post oblivian!

I tried the 360's, they are kind of cool, but I didn't even get a season out of them before the plating on the magnet started flaking off and gunking the magnet up causing it to not stick well.  The company said they would send me new ones, but I haven't gotten around to sending them in, maybe this weekend.  I like the price point of the DIY design much better though.  ;)

I set one up over the weekend but I think I need coated wire.. it seems like  it will work great. It is dirt cheap, easy and you don't have to modify your flasher like some other methods of making these
