A few years back they deemed it (socially unacceptable). What ever the heck that means. I used to have a Catahoula Cur mix that i used as a decoy dog and it broke my heart when I had to turn him into a lap dog. I have a purebred Catahoula female now and I sure wish I could put her to work, They make a great decoy dog.I can understand using them as a chase dog, BUT a decoy dog has nothing to do with them harming a coyote . Its more Washington state B.S.  It pisses me off that i cannot take the dog calling with me as I can no longer hear rattle snakes.Maybe I could just say she is a service dog  8)

Yep. That's what happened.  WDFW  decided it wasn't socially acceptable.  There was discussion about it on this message board. I'll see if a search will find those old threads.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Many years ago there was a group of Horse riders that ran coyotes with Greyhounds in East Wa. Lots of guys use Toll dogs all over the country.

This is a quote from furbearer365 from a archived post about the topic when the rule changed. I could be wrong but I bet there is something to be said for a few bad apples ruining it for everyone else, in that, people illegally hunting with dogs used coyotes as an excuse to be out with dogs. That may not be “the reason” they changed the rule, but I bet it played a role in it.

Read the hunting regulations the other day now that they are in the stores.  New rule for this year, NO HUNTING COYOTES WITH DOGS.  I am 50/50 on this one.  The reason i am for it is because their are a lot of illegal hound hunters out their and believe me, i have run across a few while out in the woods, and when i ask them what they would be hunting with hounds in Washington, it never fails i always get COYOTES.  Now their excuse is over.  But on the other hand, although i dont hunt with dogs, I now of guys in Oregon that use them when they set up to call and use them as decoy dogs and it works great.  So i quess to me the change doesn't mean much, but was wanting everyone elses thoughts.

Not like much has changed since then, however its much more thinly veiled now.

I was driving down a mainline FS road one August morning and as I was driving I noticed a few piles of bear scat near a creek and thought "oh another bear working this area" just around the corner not 100 yards from the piles there is a truck stopped in the middle of the road, dogs out sniffing around. They seemed miffed that someone had driven up on them, one person was trying to round up the dogs quick. Needless to say when I got out of the woods I called it into the game warden. While I'm all for hound hunting, I'm also for obeying the law.

I number of years ago when I was VP of the Wash Predator Hunters I spent a morning in Olympia meeting with the WF&G discussing the ban on dogs while coyote hunting.  One of the reasons was as stated hound hunters running cat with dogs and claiming they were hunting coyotes but one of the reasons were some of the videos of decoy dog killing wounded coyotes and they deemed it to be too close to Dog fighting.

I am an avid coyote hunter, hunting up to five different states every year.  I didn't have a decoy dog but my bird dog would lay alongside of me while I'm calling and let his nose cover all the upwind sides of me, a little growl and I know to turn and look up wind.  Killed a lot of coyotes I might never have seen alone.  I sure missed having him on the hunt with me here in WA, at least he could hunt with me in all the other states.

The way the law is written you can't even kill a coyotes while you have a dog in your goose pit or hunting birds with a dog.  The state told me that that wasn't the idea of the law and didn't think a ticket would be written if it happened but did say it would really be up to the discretion of the officer.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.
