I know the limit is 10 pounds but can you get ten pounds tonight before midnight and ten pounds tomorrow say at 1 am from the same place??? Squidding has been stupid good.

Im no warden, but my take is, if you limited out before midnight, took them to your car and started fishing at 12:01, you would be good. Kicker is posession limit. Not sure what that is in fresh form. If you went home, dropped off the squid and came back after midnight, i would think you are good. Maybe something I am missing in the regs? Interesting question nevertheless.

Anyone know if the squid make it down to Olympia, or do you have to be higher up in the sound?

There super easy to clean and tasty.
I’ve used them for bait but they seldom last long in fridge or freezer.  My Wife makes squid adobo with the ink.  I prefer them fried up.

You can buy bait squid super cheap at cash n carry. I think they are meant for food (obviously) and were delicious when I ate them.

I like fried squid, but it’s one animal I’ve never caught for myself. Not sure about that whole ink thing, that just doesn’t sound good.

The squid in the sound are the best I’ve ever had, better than anything I’ve bought at a restaurant. Cleaning isn’t bad and the ink isn’t an issue. There is a piece of bone or hard cartilage in the mantle that looks like a feather that needs to come out. That and the little bit of guts, eyes and beak. I’ve heard the pigment on the skin should be scraped off but I haven’t found that it makes a difference.
My interpretation of the rules are open to interpretation.

I should take my daughter out, she loves them.  But no clue how to, and would I have to go to seattle or can I go to des moines?  Just a shell fish license, pole, jig and bucket?  And you have to go at night I assume, the later the better?

It has been a good long while since I've been squidding - not since the early '90s or so, but it used to be that when they were in, they were in.

I would take the kids down to the Point Defiance Boat House in the middle of the afternoon and we would jig off of the dock, and did well.

While night jigging might be more productive in terms of the amount of time it would take to limit - there is a trade off particularly when involving kids as schedules tend to be disrupted.

I'm curious as to whether or not anyone has been jigging daylight hours, and if so - would they be so kind as to chime in.

I will try and get out right after Christmas, and get just a little more use out of this license before it gets replaced

I squid more during the day then at night.  The key is finding where they are at.  At night you have lights to attract them.  During the day the squid are usually much deeper. Say 35-70 feet.  If they are deeper than that they are tough to target and reel up.  I usually anchor with my float tube in front of the house. If they are there I’ll get them and if they are not I won’t.  If you have a boat though you can find the schools with electronics and follow them around.
Another thing people ask is “do you need to squid by the piers”?
The answer is no.  At night if you have a light it would be better away from the pier where your light makes more of a impact.

I have been wanting to try squid fishing. Sounds like a lot of fun.
