Blue Creek
« on: April 13, 2019, 03:12:58 PM »
Its the first time I will hunt black bear in the spring. I was lucky enough to get selected for Blue Creek. I've done some e-scouting as well some driving around the unit. I am trying to figure out my time off at work. Would it be to early to head out opening weekend in search of black bear? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

They weren't out yet last weekend. This weekend for sure.

If not this weekend, I’d say in a week or so it should be good.
Wish I was going up

Thank you guys. I’m taking off Wednesday afternoon and will be hunting until Sunday. Taking a shotgun just in case I get into some Turks as well.

We ended up calling it a day short headed back Saturday night. We ended doing a little under 25 miles those three days but did not cross any tracks or any sign. We glassed mornings and afternoons with no sightings. I think we were a little early but man it felt good to hike around. We saw a couple herds of elk and countless deer. Will probably give it a couple of weeks and head out early May.

Got out for the first time today, saw two bears.  One was real nice but fed into the timber before we could get in position.  Still an awesome day out on the mountain.  Got really sun burnt.  Back to try and in 2 weekends.

Bears are moving. I was fortunate enough to have some good people to share the experience and lucky we ran into a gracious land owner who offered up his spot on a chance meeting. He hadn’t been I there yet this year but said to give it a shot.
Seen 5 bears in the last week. Put the smack down on one last night right before dark.we were alternating calling sequences. He came in hot and heavy we could hear him running like a tank though the woods. Put one shot through his chest at 85 yards and it was all over as he crashed to his death 50 yards from spot he was hit.
I’ll follow up with more after some sleep.
