@Ace, what are you looking for.  The unit holds some big bulls but they are few and far between.  The hunt has gotten consistently tougher with increased pressure and forest maturation. If you are looking for a mature westside bull in the 270-290 range with the possibility of bigger it's a good unit.  I would say that 270 bulls are becoming less common than they once were just a few years ago.  It's a great unit with some of the biggest bodied bulls you'll ever see but the majority of the mature bulls are short and heavy.  :twocents:

This may be sound advice. Not sure why you received it though. 😂

Ace, keep in mind that the vast majority of hunters do not kill anything even close to 270” though. I am not being critical of their decisions, just stating a fact.

:yeah:
This is also fact.  People don't want to hear about the guy who went two weeks of daily hunting without seeing a bull before frustration caused him to turn his key and permit in.  Or that several spikes were shot. I can say that one 4x5 bull comes to mind and the happy hunter standing behind it(first bull at 72 after a lifetime of chasing them). The trophy for me lies in the hunt and I owe this hunt a lot when it comes to my friendship and time in the woods. That satisfaction is not always enough or even desired by some.  It's  draw time, like the night before Christmas.  People are set up with a lot of false expectations and very misguided by internet scores when it comes to this unit.  It's a sobering reality of what the westside has to offer, or this state for that matter. I should also state that they aren't true roosevelt's either.

I could never judge the experience of my hunt by the final score of my bull. I wish I could go back in time often. Maybe someday I’ll be rich. 😉

Some of it depends on what tag your planning to apply for. Perhaps I missed it.

Tbar is spot on. The hunt is not a slam dunk for a big bull, and unlike some other units it is not densely populated with elk. It is a huge unit, with some very big country, some extremely thick country and like many areas some of the more visible elk especially large bulls are located in private property that is either off limits or logistically difficult to hunt. I think this tends to add to the units reputation as well.

It has lots of different hunt options, want to get setup on a private land hunt, where your sitting and waiting? can probably make that happen. Want to hunt big timber and hills possibly overnight hunts in national forest? That's available also. Want a classic westside hunt on private timber company property with clear cuts and drainages? you got it. Want to mix it all together? go ahead.

My experience was there are big bulls. Unfortunately there are also a few giants that are the enemy of big. If your lucky you wont find them.

Our point system is all about luck, look at the broken down numbers on specific permits, it will show you who actually draws permits for each special hunt.  Most top point holders don’t draw, I haven’t looked at the nooksack but have others.  It’s all luck so just pic a tag that allows you to hunt the area you want to when you don’t draw, that’s what I’m doing from now on, screw waiting my entire life for a oil tag. The nook has huge bulls for what it’s worth, good luck.
More people would draw if we had more permits given out.  We would also have more elk if they stopped the silly OTC spike seasons.  When we get more elk in the woods we might get more permits.
