Manastash cow tag goes unfilled

I don't know what it is about us but we can't fill a special permit. Crowinghen drew a Manastash muzzy cow tag. We're like awesome, maybe this year we can fill one, nope. Yesterday we walked into an area we had scouted a couple months ago that was holding elk, didn't really think they would be there but had to look. We posted up in a spot that we felt if they were in there they would pass through on there way to feed. We weren't there 3 minutes when we hear a snap and I see Crowinghen swing around, muzzy to her shoulder about the same time I spot a big bull to my left, he beds down in full view about 100 yards out. Meanwhile crowinghen motions to me to cow call, she was hoping to bring the cow that was just out of range a little closer. I throw out a couple mews and another big bull below us lets out a roar. This gets all the elk riled up and they start moving past us either out of range or in the brush, no shot. While this is going on I see a spike and forky sparing still up hill of us. I keep on mewing hoping something will come our direction. The spike shows interest and starts heading my way, I'm a little concerned, we are posted up about 20 yards apart and if he comes in to close and busts me game over. Fortunately he turns about 40- 50 yards from me and starts down hill which will put him at 50 yards broadside for crowinghen. Once he stepped into a clear lane I cow called once and he stopped for a perfect broadside shot. He didn't go 40 yards and tipped over. I texted a friend to see if he was board, luckily he had some time and brought a couple quads and a friend to help us out, we got the elk taken care of just as they arrived and made quick work of what could have been a nasty pack out. This is crowinghen's first elk and with out doubt one that will never be forgotten.

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset
