Triplel 7 Issues
« on: October 06, 2022, 12:31:26 PM »
Figured I would reach out to the brain trust and see if anyone has any ideas. Ran through 3 Winchester Magnum caps and a CCI  on a T/C Hawken with no ignition. Ended up pulling the bullet and doing a deep clean on the gun.

Thanks

Plugged nipple?

Has to be a plugged nipple.  Tripple 7 is pretty good.  I have noticed the 209 primer can really foul the peep hole.  I end up cleaning it with a paperclip after the 2nd shot.  Pipe cleaner also works.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

After cleaning, I use a handheld steam cleaner and you would not believe what comes out. Look up Idaho Lewis on YouTube. He is the Hawkin Guru. He will show you how to correct all of your problems with those type of rifles.

After cleaning, I run a clean patch down the bore and pop a cap or 2 into that patch before I load it.  That clears any oil, cleaner, water, or other gunk out of the nipple.

bb76, suggestion, when you pore the loose T7 powder in the barrel tip the rifle to the side of the nipple.  Then tap the side of barrel to move the powder out of the pit in the breech out and under the nipple.  T7 is more difficult to ignite than real BP or even the Pyros, so I would suggest that you use Magnum #11 caps.

I had the same issue with Triple 7 pellets years ago, while at the range.  An old time muzzleloader guy come over and asks if I'm shooting loose powder or pellets.  I said Pellets and he responded by saying that whatever the binding agent that is in the pellets can absorb moisture enough that it will not ignite.  My Triple 7 was only 2 months old and I keep it in a ziploc bag in my safe.  I haven't used pellets, since and have never had an issue with loose powder.  Just my 2 cents.
